The wonderful way to teach reading and writing
Phonics & Grammar
Message from Sue Lloyd & Sara Wernham,
Jolly Phonics Co-Authors
Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar were developed while we
were working as ordinary teachers in a primary school and
all the ideas for the programme came out of our work in
the classroom. The multi-sensory activities were designed to keep
the children active and engaged with the teaching, which led to the
children learning more quickly and effectively.
All aspects of the teaching were trialled before being published and
we have now been involved with many research projects over the
years where the effectiveness of the programme has been verified.
As all teachers know, just telling a child something once does not mean they
understand or will remember it. Therefore revision is built into the programme to
help all children learn as well as possible.
We hope you enjoy the new and refreshed look of the materials, as well as
achieving great results.
Sue and Sara
The programme trusted by thousands of teachers around the world
Our programme is used in over 150
countries worldwide, empowering
thousands of teachers who transform
children’s literacy ability. The programme
enables teachers to get their children
reading and writing from an early age.
As the leading synthetic phonics
publisher, and the most experienced, we
provide a 7-year programme that takes
children beyond phonics and integrates
spelling, punctuation and grammar too!

Results that speak for themselves at Tudor and Rush Green Primary Schools
Emma Ince, Deputy
Headteacher at Tudor
Primary School:
“We used a phonics programme
for over 18 years, yet our results were
still below average. It was clear that we
needed to make changes. We implemented Jolly
Phonics and taught the programme with fidelity
and at a pace. This has truly transformed our
Phonics Screening Check results to above 90%,
where previously they were 24%.”
Lisa Humpheryes, Senior
Deputy Headteacher at Rush
Green Primary School:
“If I had to summarise our incredibly
successful transformation in one
line it would be to say that Jolly Phonics
is a totally kinaesthetic and engaging approach to
teaching reading and writing. Ensuring that there
is a consistent teaching approach in the school has
meant that we have become the highest achieving
school in Barking and Dagenham and beyond.”

Our Programme
Children continue to refine and extend their earlier phonics knowledge with each year providing:
- 36 spelling lessons (1 per week) - 36 grammar or punctuation lessons (1 per week)
Phonics & Grammar
A whole-school approach to high-quality literacy teaching
The programme continues through the school years,
by extending the earlier phonics teaching with further spelling,
grammar and punctuation concepts. Each year of teaching
provides continuous revision and consolidation of topics taught
in previous years. This enables children to spell and punctuate
more accurately, use a wider vocabulary and have a clear
understanding of how language works.
Sample pages show how phonics, grammar, spelling and punctuation concepts are introduced through the programme. These pages are
from the Phonics and Grammar Pupil Books. The same content can also be found in the Phonics and Grammar Handbooks.
Phonics (Reception)

website
Children are taught the 42 letter sounds, how to write them, how to blend the sounds for
reading and how to identify the sounds in words for spelling and writing. Alongside this children
learn about tricky words as well as being introduced to the alternative spellings of vowels.
Grammar (Years 1-6)
Children are introduced to parts of speech to include nouns,
verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and
conjunctions. Colours and actions are used to help children
identify parts of speech in sentences.
The examples above show how children are taken through the various forms that verbs may take.
4
Spelling (Years 1-6)
Children are initially taught one way of spelling a sound
before gradually learning that the same sound can be
represented in a number of different forms. They start with
the common variations, before progressing to other, more
unusual spelling patterns that occur as the children develop
their vocabulary for reading and writing.
The examples above show how children are taken through the different spellings of the /ai/ sound.
Children are introduced to punctuation
concepts and continue to revise these
throughout the school years. Starting with full
stops and speech marks, children will then
learn how to use exclamation and question
marks, colons and semi-colons, hyphens,
commas, bullet points and much more.

Letter sound order
1. Learning the letter sounds
Children are taught the 42 main letter sounds.
This includes alphabet sounds and digraphs,
such as /sh/, /th/, /ai/ and /ue/.
2. Learning letter formation
Using different multi-sensory methods, children
learn how to form and write the letters.
3. Blending
Children are taught how to blend the sounds
together to read and write new words.
4. Identifying the sounds in words
Listening for the sounds in words gives children
the best start for improving spelling.
5. Learning tricky words
Tricky words have irregular spellings
and children learn these separately.
6
The sounds are taught in a specific order
(not alphabetically). The first group has
been chosen as it makes more simple
three letter words than any other six
letters. This enables children to begin
building words as early as possible.

out words.
The Read and See books contain regular
