and miniature pins and balls in an
Egyptian child's grave.
• Bowling pins (historically known as skittles or kegels)
are the target of the bowling ball in various bowling
games including tenpins, five-pins, duckpins and
candlepins.
• A bowling ball is a hard spherical (round) ball used
to knock down bowling pins in the sport of bowling.
• Balls used in ten-pin bowling typically have holes for
two fingers and the thumb. Balls used in five-pin
bowling, candlepin bowling, duckpin bowling,
and kegel have no holes, and are small enough to
be held in the palm of the hand.
Bowling Alleys
• A bowling alley (also known as a bowling
center, bowling lounge, bowling arena, or
historically bowling club) is a facility where
the sport of bowling is played.
• Bowling lanes can be made of wood, wood with
overlays or synthetic material. All lanes require oil to
be applied to a portion of the lane to protect the
lane surface from the friction of the bowling ball.
• A bowling lane is 42 inches wide and 60 feet long,
with the length being measured from the foul line to
the head pin. Knowledge of these dimensions will
have little, if any, influence on your bowling
performance.
Throwing the Ball
There are five simple steps to throw the perfect aim:
First: Straighten your hand and wrist.
Second: Hold your bowling arm out at a distance while
you’re bowling.
• Third: Keeping your arm straight, swing it towards your
ankle.
• Fourth: Rotate the wrist, hand, and arm away from your
body as you bring the ball near your ankle.
• Fifth: Release the ball from your hand without exerting any
extra force on the ball.
