GRADE 9 HEALTH: Community and Environmental Health Lesson 3 COLLECTIVE ACTION FOR THE ENVIRONMENT Collectively, we can do so much for the protection of the environment. We all want to enjoy the beauty of the environment with colorful flowers, refreshing air, abundant trees and other plants and animals around. We all want to have a suitable living environment. It is an environment with clean air, and adequate water supply, adequate food supply, adequate shelter, unpolluted land, freedom from excessive noise, adequate recreational facilities. We can only achieve this if everyone will do his or her part as member of the community. Everyone in the community must follow the 3R’s of the Ecological Waste Management such as REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE – a key to protect our environment. Every homeowner, industrial, and commercial establishment institution owner must have adequate sanitary facilities for proper waste management. They must also have sanitary facilities for temporary storage of wastes. This will make the community safe and healthy. SEGREGATING SOLID WASTE You can get involved in some community projects. Volunteer your time and efforts to help solve environmental problems. Whatever your interest is, you can find ways to volunteer and help to improve your community. You can participate in some programs and projects on environment protection in the community. The Eco- Saver Program of the school is one project that aims to help manage waste not only in the school but also in every home of the students. Students and even their families can cooperate in this project. Some community problems seem very complicated but these can be solved through collective efforts. Community action is important in reducing environmental problems so the help of each member is very necessary in making a community healthy and safe. Remember, if community, organizations, and individuals are all working together and doing their best in conserving community’s natural resources and keeping the environment clean, we can all enjoy living in a happy, safe and healthy community. 1|P age GRADE 9 HEALTH: Community and Environmental Health What would you do? (10 Points) 1. What would you do if your barangay does not observe proper waste segregation? 2. What would you do if some members of your family are not consistent in observing proper waste segregation? Applying what you learned? (10 Points) You are in a cafeteria in your community to have lunch. While walking to the counter to get your order, you saw a cat under a chair with a dead mouse and flies swarming around the food counter. You notice a pile of garbage just behind the counter. As a responsible citizen, what would you do to protect yourself and the public from these environmental blights? REFERENCES 1. Burlat, Iris Coleen E.
