(2020) is the study of humans, their close relatives, and their cultural environment. This includes matters about human ancestry, economic process, social change, and history of the world. It is about how various people can be, and it tries to go through in what sense that all humans have similarities. It is the study of human race including our pre-historic origin and contemporary human diversity. Strauss (1983) explained that anthropology tries to grasp its object through its most diverse manifestations’. In addition, Czarina Saloma, et. al., elaborated that Anthropology came from the Greek word-anthropos which means ‘human’ and logos means ‘reason’- it means ‘reason about humans’ or ‘knowledge about humans’. It is a comparative study of cultural and social life. The second concept is Sociology. Steven Loyal (2003) define it as the study of human social life, groups, and society. It seeks to give a deeper assessment of individual and group behavior, including social events. It gathers social inputs which composed of frequent forms and manners such as viewpoints, consolidated values, and norms of social institutions which form part of social array. The third one is Political Science. According to the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy, Political science is a classical discipline that deals with the study of political phenomena. Its goal is to deepen human understanding of the forms and nature of political action and to develop theoretical tools for interpreting politically meaningful phenomena. It focuses on fundamental values of equality, freedom, and justice and its process linked with the dynamics of conflict, resolution, and cooperation. These are the fundamental information pertaining to Anthropology, Sociology, and Political Science. Do you want to continue your journey? Go, and you will not regret. Each definition is always associated with man’s relationship to his environment. Hence, man’s social interaction serves as an avenue for creating patterns of behaviour that will guide the members of society to live in an organized and orderly manner. Society refers to a group of people sharing a common culture within a defined territorial boundaries. Likewise, every human society is organized in such a way that there are rules of conduct, customs, traditions, folkways and mores, and expectations that ensure appropriate behaviors among members. (Palispis, 2007 p. 254). Thus, every society is unique in terms of culture. Culture is a composite or multifarious areas that comprise beliefs, practices, values, attitudes, laws, norms, artifacts, symbols, knowledge, and everything that a person learns and shares as a member of society. Therefore, culture is: 1. A product of human interaction. 2. A social heritage that is complex and socially transmitted. 3. Provides socially acceptable patterns for meeting biological and social needs. 4. A distinguishing factor. 5. Cumulative 6. Meaningful to human beings. Aspects of Culture 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Dynamic, flexible and adaptive. Shared and contested. Learned through socialization or enculturation. Patterned social interactions. Integrated and at times unstable. Transmitted through socialization. Requires language and other forms of communication. Note: Practice Personal Hygiene Protocols at all times 14 The Social and Cultural Change Change is something that presses us out of our comfort zone. It is destiny-filtered, heart grown, faith built. Change is inequitable; not a respecter of persons. This is for the better or for the worst, depending on where you view it. Change has an adjustment period which varies on the individual. It is uncomfortable, for changing from one state to the next upsets our control over outcomes. Change has a ripping effect on those who won’t let go. Social change refers to an alteration in the social order of a society. This may include changes in nature, social institutions, social behaviors, or social relations. An example of this is the change from the traditional way of life to a more complex, technologically advanced, and rapidly changing style of life in the region and in the country in general. These changes are because of industrialization, urbanization and technology brought by the different countries in the world. Cultural change deals with the evolution of cultural components. This is a modification of a society through innovation, invention, discovery, or contact with other societies. In region 2 cultural changes are very evident because of innovations, inventions and discoveries. An example of this is the used of reaper by the farmers during harvest time. MASIDDO Teacher/Writer Note: Practice Personal Hygiene Protocols at all times 22 UNDERSTANDING CULTURE, SOCIETY AND POLITICS Name: ____________________________ Grade Level: __________ Section: ___________________________ Date: ________________ LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET CULTURAL RELATIVISM BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS Culture is a composite or multifarious areas that comprise beliefs, practices, values, attitudes, laws, norms, artifacts, symbols, knowledge and everything that a person learns and shares a member of society. As mentioned by Dean Champion and his associates, “the range of variations between culture is almost endless and yet at the same time cultures ensemble one another in many important ways”. Somehow, cultural variation is affected by man’s geographical set-up and social experiences. Cultural variation refers to the differences in social behaviours that different cultures exhibit around the world. Have you ever seen or eaten food from another place, such as dried squid or fried crickets and think of it as weird and gross? This is an example of ethnocentrism! That means you use your own culture as the center and evaluate other cultures based on it. You are judging, or making assumptions about the food of other countries based on your own norms, values, or beliefs. Thinking “dried squid is smelly” or “people shouldn’t eat insects” are examples of ethnocentrism in societies where people may not eat dried squid or insects. Is ethnocentrism bad or good? On the one hand, ethnocentrism can lead to negative judgments of the behaviors of groups or societies. It can also lead to discrimination against people who are different. For example, in many countries, religious minorities (religions that are not the dominant religion) often face discrimination. But on the other hand, ethnocentrism can create loyalty among the same social group or people in the same society. For example, during the World Cup or Olympics, you may tend to root for your own country and believe that the players or teams representing your country are much better. National pride is also part of ethnocentrism. To avoid judging the cultural practices of groups that are different to yours, we can use the cultural relativism approach. Cultural relativism refers to not judging a culture to our own standards of what is right or wrong, strange or normal. Instead, we should try to understand cultural practices of other groups in its own cultural context. Note: Practice Personal Hygiene Protocols at all times 23 For example, instead of thinking, “Fried crickets are disgusting!” one should instead ask, “Why do some cultures eat fried insects?” Cultural relativism is the ability to understand a culture on its own terms and not to make judgments using the standards of one’s own culture. The goal of this is promote understanding of cultural practices that are not typically part of one’s own culture. Using the perspective of cultural relativism leads to the view that no one culture is superior than another culture when compared to systems of morality, law, politics, and the like. For example, you are assessing one’s culture by its own standards rather than viewing it through the lens of your own culture. On the other hand, ethnocentrism is a perception that arises from the fact that cultures differ and each culture defines reality differently. For example, you are judging another culture or person solely based from your own values and standards. You think you are more superior that other. Encouraging you to examine the diversity of other cultures and explore the beliefs, values, and practices from the perspective of someone else can help you understand the complex concept of cultural relativism. Let’s check your understanding on the topic through answering series of activities. Enjoy performing the different activities. If you have question/s feel free to text or message the teacher via Facebook. CULTURAL SYMBOLS AND PRACTICES Symbols are the basis of culture. Everything one does throughout their life is based and organized through cultural symbolism. Some good examples of symbols/symbolism would be objects, figures, sounds, and colors. It could also be facial expressions, gestures or word interpretations. Cultural Symbol in the Philippines: Mano or pagmamano is an "honoringgesture" used in Filipino culture performed as a sign of respect to elders and as a way of requesting a blessing from the elder. Every year in January, Isabela holds its Bambanti Festival that aims to celebrate the province’s rich culture and tradition, its land and most especially its people. Note: Practice Personal Hygiene Protocols at all times 33 2. SOCIAL SYMBOLS AND PRACTICES The self is a product of socialization. According to George Herbert Mead (18631931), An American sociologist and the father of sociological tradition called Symbolic Interactionism, our concept of the self is acquired through the use of symbolic gestures. The earliest form of communication between animals is called gestures. Gestures are distinctive behaviors displayed by animals in order to respond to another gesture or send signal to another animal. When a dog wags its tail to another dog, the wagging of tail is a form of gesture. Infants displays this kind of behavior toward their mothers or primary caregivers. When infants, however learn how to utter words and associate them with the certain responses, symbolic gestures become a form of language. The symbols which interest social anthropologists are public symbols, shared by members of a particular social group. They express aspects of the ideology of the group, understood within a specific social and moral system, and the same symbols may mean something quite different to members of another social group. Note: Practice Personal Hygiene Protocols at all times 34 3. POLITICAL SYMBOLS AND PRACTICES Political symbolism is symbolism that is used to represent a political standpoint. A political symbol can be any object, person, word, performance, or gesture that represents a political institution, hierarchy, movement, belief, or ideology. Flags, kings, and queens can thus serve as political symbols, as can songs, poems, and national heroes. Example: The scales of justice relate to fairness in the judicial process. They indicate that each side of a case will be considered in a court case. LGBT symbols like the Rainbow flag are used to promote the political goal of LGBT rights. The Philippine Flag The flag was made of silk. The sun represents liberty and its eight rays represent the first eight provinces that revolted against Spain. The three stars stand for the three big islands of the Philippines, namely Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. As for the colours used, white represents hope for equality, while the blue stripe stands for peace, truth, and justice. Finally, the red stripe symbolizes patriotism and valor. However, when the two stripes are interchanged, this signals that the country is in a state of war. Note: Practice Personal Hygiene Protocols at all times 35 4. ECONOMIC SYMBOLS AND PRACTICES At the most basic level, economics attempts to explain our practices on how and why we make the purchasing choices we do. Four key economic concepts– scarcity, supply and demand, costs and benefits, and incentives–can help explain many decisions that humans make. Scarcity Scarcity explains the basic economic problem that the world has limited–or scarce–resources to meet seemingly unlimited wants. This reality forces people to make decisions about how to allocate resources in the most efficient way possible so that as many needs as possible are met. Supply and Demand Supply refers to the amount of goods that are available. Demand refers to how many people want those goods. Supply and demand should reach an equilibrium. Example: An Ice cream company sets the prices of a flavored ice cream at 50php. No one wants the product, so the price is lowered to 30php. Demand for the product increases at the new lower price point and the company begins to make money and a profit. Note: Practice Personal Hygiene Protocols at all times 36 Cost-Benefit Analysis also known as a benefit cost analysis is a process by which organizations can analyze decisions, systems or projects, or determine a value for intangibles. The model is built by identifying the benefits of an action as well as the associated costs, and subtracting the costs from benefits. Economic Incentives Economic incentives are what motivates a person to behave in a certain way, while preferences are your needs, wants and desires. Economic incentives provide you the motivation to pursue your preferences. Here are some more economic symbols: Note: Practice Personal Hygiene Protocols at all times 37 Points to Ponder: 1. A symbol has meaning within a group, because of a shared understanding of what the symbol signifies. 2. Stories, traditions, history, and cultural norms contribute to the meaning of a symbol. 3. At the most basic level, symbols are important because they help people compose meaning in their interactions with one another. It is the lifelong process by which people learn the ways of the society in which they live. More specifically, it is the process by which humans: 1. acquire a sense of self or a social identity, 2. develop their human capacities, 3. learn the culture(s) of the society in which they live, and 4. learn expectations for behavior. Socialization is a learning process that begins shortly after birth. Human infants are born without any culture. They must be transformed by their parents, teachers, and others into cultural and socially adept animals. Moreover, early childhood is considered as the period of the most intense and the most crucial socialization. It is then that we acquire language and learn the fundamentals of our culture. It is also when much of our personality takes shape. However, we continue to be socialized throughout our lives. We also have experiences that teach us lessons and potentially lead us to alter our expectations, beliefs, and personality. Socialization is not a one-way process such that people simply absorb these lessons. It is also a process by which people negotiate, resist, ignore, and even challenge those lessons. Various groups or institutions play a significant role in the socialization of an individual and in shaping that person’s personality. Foremost among them is the family. But as the child grows older, he or she is influenced by other socializing agencies like friends, school, church, and mass media. The following are the Agents of Socialization: 1) The Family is the basic unit of society, the primary social institutions or social group where one is born. It serves as the main Note: Practice Personal Hygiene Protocols at all times 42 link between the child and society and is the first, the closest and most influential social group in the child’s life. 2) The Peer Group is the informal grouping of two or more members, more or less of the same age, the neighborhood, or school is called peer group, friends, clique, gang, or barkada. This is the only agency of socialization not controlled primarily by adults. 3) The Church provides spiritual guidance, norms of conduct, and rules of behavior. It helps the government to become honest, fair and democratic. The basic principles and tenets of the Christian religion centering God and His love for people are taught to the children. 4) The School is a formal agency for weaning children from home and introducing them to society. 5) Mass Media informs, educates, and entertains. It affects the audience’s behavior and attitudes, positively or negatively. 6) The Workplace is where the individual gets socialized to its norms and values and finds his or her place in its hierarchy of statuses. The person also joins professional associations, unions, or other groups. Should they find the workplace dull and unfair or unrewarding, the employee can always look for another job. Socialization is the process by which children become participating and functioning members of society and fit into an organized way of life as mere adults. Through socialization, the culture of the group is transmitted, the individual develops into a socially functioning person, and the members of the group are encouraged to conform to the norms of the group. Socialization is realized when children become productive adult members. However, socialization is not simply molding an individual according to a standard social pattern, as he or she is afforded some leeway in his or her action. LEARNING COMPETENCY Explain the context, content, processes, and consequences of socialization. (Quarter 1, Week 5) Note: Practice Personal Hygiene Protocols at all times 43 DIRECTIONS Let’s Start! The group exists as long as individuals are interested to be connected among themselves. Each society is made up of smaller groups and associations that are built on social class, personal interest, or community goals. Groups are prevalent in our social lives and provide a significant way to understand and define ourselves—both through groups we feel a connection to and those we do not. Groups also play an important role in society. As enduring social units, they help foster shared value systems and are key to the structure of society as we know it. There are four primary sociological perspectives for studying groups: functionalist, critical, feminist, and symbolic interactionist. We can look at the Occupy movement through the lenses of these methods to better understand the roles and challenges that groups offer. The functionalist perspective is a big-picture, macro-level view that looks at how different aspects of society are intertwined. This perspective is based on the idea that society is a well-balanced system with all parts necessary to the whole. It studies the functions these parts play in the reproduction of the whole. In the case of the Occupy movement, a functionalist might look at what macro-level needs the movement serves. Structural functionalism recognizes that there are tensions or conflicts between different structural elements of the system. The huge inequalities generated by the economic system might function positively as part of the incentive needed for people to commit themselves to risky economic ventures, but they conflict with the normative structure of the political decision-making system based on equality and democratic principles. The Occupy movement forces both haves and have-nots to pay attention to the imbalances between the economic and political systems. Occupy emerges as an expression of the disjunction between these two systems and functions as a means of initiating a resolution of the issues. Note: Practice Personal Hygiene Protocols at all times 49 • • • Primary group – this typically a small social group whose members share close personal and enduring relationships. This also includes intimate relationships that are usually long lasting. Ex: Family, Childhood friends Secondary group – This has the opposite characteristics of a primary group. It can be small or large and they are mostly impersonal and usually short term. These groups are typically found at work and school. Ex: School mates, coworkers Reference group – This is a group which we compare ourselves such us those college freshmen serves as a standard against which behaviors and attitude are measured. It is use to guide our behavior and attitudes to identify social norms. Ex: Parents, siblings, teachers Social organization (division of labor) is a major influence on social behavior and is the link between human nature reacting to environmental conditions (natural, demographic, economic, cultural), and overt social behaviour patterns; and consciousness. In studying any society, we can observe various social groups and institutions, each with its specific functions. It does not matter whether the institutions are related to business, religion, the legal system, or families. They all have functions. For instance, the primary function of a legal system is likely to be the maintenance of the social order in society. The functions of different institutions may overlap and are likely to be interrelated in complex ways. Complicating our understanding of them is the fact that any institution is likely to have multiple functions, some of which are more obvious than others. In trying to discover and understand them, it is useful to think of some of the functions as being manifest and others latent. Manifest functions are those that are obvious and easily discovered even by strangers. In contrast, latent functions are those that are less apparent and more difficult to uncover. If you ask people what the functions of their institutions are, most will describe the manifest ones. They may not have even thought of all of the latent ones. However, to get a full understanding of a society and its culture, it is essential to comprehend the latent functions as well. In order to discover them, it is often necessary to observe their effects because people are often unaware of them.
