What is Linear Perspective?
• Linear Perspective is a type of perspective used by
artists.
• Linear Perspective is the art of representing threedimensional objects on a two-dimensional surface.
• It is called Linear Perspective when we draw imagined
or real lines that meet at a point on the horizon.
• These lines help us to draw the size, shape, and
position of objects correctly.
Parallel Lines
• Railway tracks are parallel.
• Parallel lines are an equal distance apart and they never cross.
When we look at railroad tracks in real life the lines
moving away from us appear to get closer together .
The point where the lines meet is called the ‘Vanishing Point’.
The Vanishing Point is always on the horizon line.
Horizon Line
•
The horizon line is the line at where the earth's surface and the sky appear to
meet.
•
In Art, the horizon line is at your 'eye-level line'
Eye-Level
A drawing has one-point perspective when it
contains only one vanishing point on the horizon
line.
You only need to know about One-Point Perspective now but it is
important to understand that it is possible to use more than one
vanishing point.
Can you think of
some examples of
places where we
can see
One Point
Perspective?
Here are some images
that show One Point
Perspective in the world
around us.
One Point Perspective
One Point Perspective is important to understand so
that your drawings are accurate.
Remember to use this type of perspective if you are
drawing roads, railway tracks, hallways, or buildings
that are directly in front of you.
In reality of course, there are always objects which
won't be lined up perfectly, but for now, let's keep
things simple!
Leonardo Da Vinci
• The Dark Knight
Rises In Madrid
This artwork uses
trick perspective
to make the
ground seem like
it is 3D.
Ask questions if you don’t understand!
You need to understand all these terms. There
will be at least one question about each.
What is Linear Perspective?
What is a Vanishing Point?
What is a Horizon Line?
What is One-Point Perspective?
What are Parallel Lines?
There will be some questions about
definitions but the exam will also have
pictures that you need to label. If you
understand all the information we have talked
about then you will have no problems.
