Meaning of Security Education (WK 1) Origin of Security Education The subject came into being when President Jonathan's administration organized the stakeholders conference in 2010. The conference was directed by the Nigeria Educational Research Development Council (NERDC). The conference was organized to change the national educational curriculum in line with the millennium development goals and national education policy. At the stakeholders conference, it was agreed that the number of subjects done at the Junior School level should be reduced. For this reason, religion and national values was introduced as a subject comprising the following: a. Civic Education b. Social Studies c. IRS/ CRS d. Security Education * Note that today IRS/CRS has now been separated from national values. Scope of Civic Education The scope of the subject looks at the areas covered by the subject. Nigeria uses her personnel, resources, experience and knowledge to fight insurgency, militancy, terrorism etc in order to reduce the effects of disasters, risks and danger for the protection of the Nigerian citizens. The scope also involves inculcating the Nigerian national values in the citizens. Importance of Civic Education 1. Protection of lives and property. 2. Establish rapid response system to emergency situations. 3. To help reduce disasters and risks in our environment. 4. To teach the Nigerian citizens about our national values. 5. To maintain law and order. 6. To provide risk management information and skills to the Nigerian people. Meaning of Security Education This is the study of the protection, safety and wellbeing of man and his properties including natural and man made resources in the environment. It also deals with disasters and risk reduction in our environment. Classification of Risk Risk can be classified into two parts: 1. Natural risk eg volcanic eruption, earth quake, etc 2.
