From inventing the wheel to the modern-day communication systems, mankind has made enormous progress and acquired greater power over his habitat. But as the maxim goes by, with great power comes greater responsibility. This is particularly true in the modern age of Cyberspace where digital crimes have become norm of the day. As with any other technology, Cyberspace has brought along itself certain challenges. In order to tackle those challenges, the importance of cybersecurity cannot be neglected. This is particularly true for a third world country such as Pakistan which still has to made significant progress in this domain. The dismal state of cybersecurity in Pakistan has been made transparent from numerous instances of breaches ranging from government organizations’ websites being taken down by hackers to the audio leaks of the most sophisticated office of the country, the PM office. A number of factors are responsible for the dismal state of cybersecurity in Pakistan. These include, but are not limited to, the incompetent cybersecurity agencies together with the indifference of the government towards cybersecurity. Also, the outdated systems have made the breaches of cybersecurity facile. if left unaddressed, the breaches of cybersecurity have horrendous implications. They can dent the economy a state. They have the potential to undermine the national security as well as tarnish the global image of the state. Harassments and defamations may very well turn into a regular pattern. Thus, it is pertinent to address the underlying reasons for the breaches. In this regard, Awareness campaign on cybercrimes might prove fruitful. Also, coordination among various organs of the government is a must in order to overcome the challenges of breaches of cybersecurity in Pakistan. The implementation of the first cybersecurity policy in letter and spirit coupled with other regulatory steps may also prove beneficial in this regard. The state of Pakistan must curb these breaches if it wants t o secure its national security.
