Leonardo was founded in 1968 in Paris by kinetic artist and astronautical pioneer Frank Malina, who identified the need for a journal to serve as an international conduit of communication among artists, with an emphasis on the words of artists who integrate science and growing technologies in their work. Leonardo, published by The MIT Press, has emerged as the preeminent international peer-reviewed journal on the application and impact of contemporary science and technology in the arts and music, as well as the application and effect of the arts and humanities on science and technology. Leonardo is drawn to work that blurs the artificial lines that divide contemporary arts and sciences. The book includes illustrated pieces written by artists regarding their own work, as well as papers written by historians, theorists, philosophers, and other experts.
