: Hemodialysis Nurse

JOB DESCRIPTION
I – Job Summary:
Provide safe, effective client care using professional knowledge and skills in accordance with the
policies and procedures.
II – Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Prepares the Hemodialysis machine and Dialysis Set.
2. Prepares the patient by:
 Explaining the procedure.
 Taking the initial vital signs including the weight.
3. Prepares patient for the procedure by applying strict aseptic techniques on the following:
Site –
 AV Fistula – insert AV Fistula needles.
 AV Shunt - disconnects Teflon Connector and attaches the bloodlines connected to the machine.
 Subclavian Catheter or Tunneled dialysis catheter (TDC) – connects bloodlines via arterial and
venous port of dialysis catheter.
4. Withdraw or extracts blood for ordered laboratory examination from attending physician.
5. Administer heparin to patient according to the physician’s order.
6. Carry out doctor’s order (X- ray, oxygen, IV).
7. Monitor patient throughout the treatment and watch for any untoward reactions.
8. Informs or refers the patient to the medical resident on duty or attending nephrologist for any
untoward reactions during the dialysis treatment. Patient should be in normal condition before leaving
the unit.
9. Observes strict proper hand washing and aseptic techniques throughout the procedure.
10. Replaces all used HD stocks ready for the next patient.
11. Informs attending nephrologist of the schedule of their patients.
12. Keeps pertinent records of patients in a safe place for confidential purposes.
13. Makes proper charges on additional procedure that were done.
14. Maintain cleanliness in the unit at all times.
15. Attends and represents the hemodialysis unit in meetings and seminars.
16. Aware of the organization structure of the hemodialysis unit and familiarity with organizations,
functions, policies, regulations, and procedure of hospital.

17. Performs other work- related tasks as maybe assigned by the management.
II – QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
 Licensed Nurse, Renew yearly.
 Licensed Renal Nurse by the Renal Nurse Association of the Philippines.
 Good physical and mental health with stamina to work effectively under adverse conditions.
 Understanding of principles of nursing practices based on physical, biological and social sciences and its
application. Identified nursing care problems and executes appropriate nursing actions.
 Able to communicate effectively to patients, external clients, co- workers and all hospital personnel.

Job Title
: Hemodialysis Technician
Dept. / Section : Hemodialysis Unit
Supervised by : Hemodialysis Head Nurse
JOB DESCRIPTION
Dialysis Technician function in multiple roles, which include dialyzer reprocessing, equipment maintenance
and repair, water treatment monitoring, participation in quality improvement, vascular access monitoring
and direct patient care.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The list below general and may vary based on different state laws and facility policies;















Assembles necessary supplies
Prepares dialysate according to established procedures and the dialysis prescription
Assembles and prepares the dialysis extracorporeal circuit according to protocol and dialysis
prescription.
Verifies absence of residual sterilants.
Test monitors and machine functions, including alarms, conductivity and temperature.
Sets monitors and alarms according to unit and manufacturer protocols.
Perform pipe installation and troubleshooting related to RO machine.
Documents treatment parameters and communicates patient condition and issues to Registered
Nurse.
Monitors patients and equipment, responds to alarms and re- adjusts treatment parameters as
defined by established protocols and individual patient requirements.
Change fluid removal rate and patient position, and administers replacement saline as directed by
the registered nurse, physicians order, or unit protocol.
Responds appropriately to dialysis related emergencies such as hypotensive episodes, needle
displacement or infiltration, clotting episodes, blood leaks, air emboli, etc. Initiates cardiopulmonary
resuscitation (CPR) in the event of cardiac arrest.
Discard dialysis supplies and sanitizes equipment according to manufacturer and unit protocol.
Communicates emotional, medical, psychosocial, and nutritional concerns to the Registered Nurse.
Maintains professional conduct, good communication skills, and confidentiality in the care of the
patients. Participates in the multidisciplinary process.
Collaborates with the Registered Nurse in identifying and meeting patient education goals.
