Layers of the atmosphere
The atmosphere is the air surrounding Earth. It is made up of different layers. The layers of Earth's atmosphere
are divided based on changes in temperature with respect to altitude. Earth’s atmosphere stretches from the
surface of the planet up to as far as 10,000 kilometers (6,214 miles) above the surface. The atmosphere is made
up of different gases, water vapor, and dust particles.
A few important characteristics of different layers are shown in the table.
Layers
Characteristics
Troposphere
Most dense; all weather is found in this region
Stratosphere
Absorbs and scatters harmful solar radiation
Mesosphere
Meteors burn up in this layer
Thermosphere
Auroras and satellites occur in this layer
1

Which layer of the atmosphere contains the
ozone layer?
the stratosphere
the troposphere

Visualizing Global Temperatures
Earth is heated differently in various areas of the world. Temperature patterns can be seen when looking at a map
of average temperatures. The image shown is an example of how temperatures are similar in areas north and
south of the equator.

The image shows four different labeled latitudes
across the globe.
Based on the graph, which pair of latitudes have
the MOST similar climates?

This model demonstrates
A. the condensation of water vapor driven by
clouds in the atmosphere.
B. the radiation of ocean currents driven by energy
from Earth's core.
C. the convection of ocean currents driven by
energy from the Sun.

The diagram shows the layers of the atmosphere.

The diagram shows information about the gases
in the layers of Earth's atmosphere.
Using the diagram, how does the composition of
the mesosphere protect life on Earth?
A. The mesosphere burns most of the debris that
enters Earth's atmosphere from space.
B. The mesosphere traps the Sun's thermal energy
to keep the temperature of Earth stable.
In which two layers of the atmosphere does
temperature increase as altitude increases?
A.
B.
C.
D.
the mesosphere and stratosphere
C. The mesosphere contains mostly water vapor
and sends rainwater down to Earth's surface.
D. The mesosphere contains a layer of ozone that
absorbs most of the Sun's ultraviolet radiation.

Ozone (O3) is a pale blue gas at standard
conditions. Ozone is one of the most toxic
inorganic substances known, causing flexible
materials, such as lung tissue, to become
extremely brittle. Even though it is dangerous at
ground level, ozone is important to life on Earth.
Why is ozone important to life on Earth?
A. Ozone in the atmosphere absorbs harmful
ultraviolet radiation from space.
B. Ozone in the troposphere destroys excess
atmospheric carbon dioxide.
C. Ozone in the thermosphere absorbs energy that
is reflected by Earth.
D. Ozone in the biosphere maintains balanced
ecosystem populations.

Ben is boiling water to make pasta. He leaves his
metal stirring spoon in the boiling water for a few
minutes. What will most likely happen to the
temperature of the metal spoon?
A. The temperature of the metal spoon will
increase because cold energy from the spoon
will transfer to the water.

A. Heat flows from a cold object to a hot object and
can cause an object's temperature to change.
B. Heat flows from a hot object to a cold object and
can cause an object's temperature to change.
C. Heat flows from a cold object to a hot object but
will not cause an object's temperature to
change.
B. The temperature of the metal spoon will
decrease because heat energy from the spoon
will transfer to the water.
