Media and Information Literacy Name of Learner:_______________________ Section:_______________________________ Date:____________ Second Semester Week 1 HOW COMMUNICATION IS INFLUENCED BY MEDIA AND INFORMATION I. Background Information for Learners Communication is one of the most significant aspects in life of all living organisms, especially human beings. There is always a constant need for people to generate, organize and pass information from one party to the next. What is Media? Do you always watch films? Do you listen to the radio everyday? Do you send text messages to your friends or anyone using your smartphones or a mobile applications (also known as “apps”)? Do you read newspapers online? If your answer is “yes,” then you have already experienced using various forms of media. Defining “Media” When we have a brilliant idea about something and we want to share it with others, we look for ways to let that idea travel from our brains to outside our body. So often we get a pen and paper to write the idea down. From our mind, the brain controls our hand that jots down that thought using the ink on the pen as the paper absorbs the ink. That idea, now on paper, becomes a piece of information. Since we are enthused to share that idea with others, find the best way to reach the hands of others. We want other people to read about our thought, to listen to our insights, and to speak our mind. Additionally, when you use your smartphone in creating a content about a certain idea and you would like to share it on your social media accounts, it means sharing of information and communication with people who are connected with your social network. For example, you took a picture of the sky which is cloudy and looks like it’s about to rain, you processed the image by using the apps on your phone to enhance and add text the image, then upload it on your “Facebook or Twitter” account so that people would see it and react or write a comment about it. Then, you may consider yourself as a media creator and a source of information. This is how media enters the picture—as an aid. Media helps us in spreading information in different forms and devices. Media also assist in improving the way we communicate with other people, especially those who are very far away from us. But the most important thing to remember is how that message is crafted into information which is carried and disseminated through the media. Will the information be read or heard properly by the receiver? Will the essence of the message be understood clearly? Information and communication goes hand in hand with media, because these concepts are at the core of what media actually is. The dictionary defines “media” as “the means of communication, as radio and television, newspapers and magazines, that reach or influence people widely.” It is also important to note that media is actually the plural form of “medium,” the meaning of which also reflects the importance of the information and communication process. The Communication Process Let us first understand how the basic communication process works in order for us to understand how communication influences media and information. The Shannon-Weaver Model of Communication (see Fig. 1) is the simplest and maybe the oldest form of communication, it shows a straight through type of communication process. This means that we follow a straight line of sending a message. In our example the, the sender (S) is you, the one who had an idea to share or the source of information. From the source, the message (M) is relayed as a piece of information. You use your smartphone as your channels (C) to share the message. The channel is the media that helps you reach your intended audience. The audience—the people who read, listened, reacted or shared your information—is the receiver (R). The Feedback Mechanism However, there is an essential factor that must be considered in this model of communication, we call it feedback. Feedback is important to know if the message was effectively delivered to the receiver. Did the sender encode the idea effectively or not? Did the receiver decode the message properly? Did the channel of the media deliver the information properly? Were there some problems occurred when the information was delivered? Were there problems in the way the message was understood?
