NATURAL SCIENCES: PLANNING AND PREPARATION GRADE 9 TERM 1 Topic / Content / Consepts / Skills (WHAT will I teach/introduce/support…) EDUCATOR KNOWLEDGE STRAND DATE: Term 1 Week 1 & Week 2_2021 Teaching Methodologies & Classroom management (HOW am I going to teach/introduce/support…) Topic: Cells as the basic units of life. Introduction Concepts: • Cell structure • Differences between plant- and animal cells Engage Start the lesson by asking these key questions: Aims of the lesson: At the end of this lesson you should: 1. Be able to identify and draw the cell as the basic structural and functional unit of all living organisms. 2. Know that cells are microscopic small. 3. Be able to name/identify/ draw/ label the parts of a basic structure of a plant and animal cell. 4. Be able to know the functions of the different cell organelles, cytoplasm and membranes and/ cell walls. 5. Compare plant and animal cells OR ➢ What are cells? ➢ Why are cells so small? ➢ What does it mean to be microscopic? ➢ Are there different types of cells? ➢ What is inside a cell and why is it there? ➢ Are plant and animal cells the same? Allow learners to give meaning and functions to the following terminology as the lesson unfolds. (Learner Informal Assessment; Activity Sheet; nr. 1) • cell • cytoplasm • eukaryotic • membrane • microscope • microskopic LIFE AND LIVING Resources / LTSM (WHAT will I use to teach/introduce/support.) Sasol Inzalo Textbook – Grade 9A Teacher Guide – pages 24 – 41 Informal assessment at the bottom of this lesson plan. PowerPoint: Annexure A Learner’s own textbook – refer to the index of the book on this section w.r.t. cell structure and differences between plant and animal cells. Watch YouTube video on cell organelles https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zafJKbMPA8 1|P a ge GET GRADE 9 NATURAL SCIENCES DRAFT LESSON PLAN: CELLS AS THE BASIC UNITS OF LIFE Write down/ tabulate/ identify/ explain differences between plant and animal cells. Prior knowledge: Grade 8 Life and Living • • • nucleus organism prokariotic • Brainstorm the 7 Life Functions of Life (Use PowerPoint) • Learners to complete an Informal Assessment Activity Sheet; nr. 2) Prior-Knowledge Gr. 7 CAPS is suggested that learners should learn of the classification system of organisms (plants and animals) in the 5 Kingdoms, i.e. Bacteria, Protista, Fungi, Plants and Animals. This is a good opportunity to remind learners and to ask if the remember what the 5 kingdoms are. • Ensure that learners are introduced to prefixes like cyto-, pre-, photo-, micro-, etc. • Use PowerPoint (Annexure A) to teach topic and content. Cell organelles Introduction: YouTube rap song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zafJKbMPA8 Give learners a diagram of the cell (Learner Informal Assessment; Activity Sheet; nr. 3.1) and allow them to complete the labels. (It might be necessary to play the above video, stop, play, after each function is rapped. 2|P a ge GET GRADE 9 NATURAL SCIENCES DRAFT LESSON PLAN: CELLS AS THE BASIC UNITS OF LIFE Different Cells At the start of this section you might like to start with the following questions: Do you think all cells are the same? If not, can you think of reasons why and how they differ? Allow learners to study diagrams of plantand animal cells and to write down the differences they observe in a table (tabulate). (Learner Informal Assessment; Activity Sheet; nr. 3.2). After this learner activity work through their differences and rectify where necessary using the PowerPoint PARENTS LEARNER ACTIVITIES Parents emphasize the concept and content of the cell structure by helping learner to build a 3D model of a typical cell. Try activities in learner textbooks which Annexure D covers the content as covered in the previous column. Also see learner’s textbook on this topic. Also look for additional videos or pictures/ diagrams on the internet to support the information in the previous column. See the Learner Activity Worksheet below. Learners complete informal assessment activities below. Informal Assessment Values learned Build a 3D model of a typical cell Responsibilty, handling of material, creativity 3|P a ge GET GRADE 9 NATURAL SCIENCES DRAFT LESSON PLAN: CELLS AS THE BASIC UNITS OF LIFE ACTIVITY SHEET 1.
