Research question:
What were the ways in which Johann Sebastian Bach both upheld and challenged traditional musical
conventions in his compositions?
Subquestions:
1. In what ways did Johann Sebastian Bach incorporate innovative techniques or ideas
into his compositions?
2. How did Johann Sebastian Bach's compositions reflect or adhere to traditional
musical conventions of his time?
Answers to the 2 subquestions:
(1)Johann Sebastian Bach is famous for his creative and innovative usage of his skills in both
ways of music and his ideas. One of his ideas was that he used multiple independent
melodies at once and he let them play. He used differentand weird patterns of rhytm and
time signatures. This is because he wanted to be orginal and create something only he had
created which worked. He was one of the first composers to use the tonal system, which
gives a hierarchy of Nodes and keys which is one of the biggest fundamentals in Western
music. He basically combined tradition and innovation which still, to this day inspires people.
(2) He is obviously known for his innovative and original compositions. His music reflects a
bit of the traditional music conventions of the earlier years. You can view this for yourself
because many of these pieces he made are made with already well-established musical
forms like the fugue and the Chorale which were used a lot in his time. Another very much
used form by him in the Baroque era was the tonal harmony. A lot of Religious and classical
theme's were used by him but also things like folk music. Which Bach's music challenged all
the musical conventions of that time, creating unique classical music.
Answers to the research questions: Johann Sebastian Bach upheld traditional musical
conventions in his compositions in a number of ways. He often established musical forms
such as the fugue and the chorale but het also composed using tonal harmony, which was
used a lot in the Baroque era. He used folk music, religious music, and classical themes into
his music.
Bach is also known for challenging traditional musical conventions in his compositions, not
also that but also for his creative and innovative use of musical techniques and ideas like
putting multiple melodies together. He was also one of the first composers to extensively
use the tonal system which wasn't very much used in that time thus making him original.
Also the fact that he used unusual rhythmic patterns and time signatures made his music
stand out even more. An overall gives us that Bach's music reflects a unique mix of
tradition and innovation as mentioned before.
This is a piece of Johann Sebastian Bach’s music, as
you can see it’s really unnatural and looks nothing like the traditional way
Here is another example of Johan Sebastian Bach’s work, a pure chaos.
