Verbals are verb forms (words that look like verbs or could be verbs in other sentences) that are used as one of the following: noun adjective adverb NOTE: A verbal can never be the verb in the sentence. It functions as a noun, adjective, or adverb. An infinitive is formed out of a verb, but it does NOT act as a verb in a sentence. QUESTION What is an Infinitive Phrase? An infinitive phrase is a phrase that starts with an infinitive (TO+V) and works as a noun, adjective, or adverb Example of infinitive phrase working as a noun "I like to motivate people. INFINITIVE PHRASE To motivate- Infinitive People- Object of the verb "motivate" Example of infinitive phrase working as a noun My goal is to spread happiness. INFINITIVE PHRASE To spread- Infinitive Happiness- Object of the verb "motivate" Example of infinitive phrase working as a noun Nobody wants to face bad experiences. Example of infinitive phrase working as a noun Nobody wants to face bad experiences. INFINITIVE PHRASE To face- Infinitive Bad experiences- Object of the verb "face" Example of infinitive phrase working as an adjective The person to contact tomorrow is Ryan. INFINITIVE PHRASE to make- infinitive people- object of the verb "make" happy- object complement (giving information about the object "people" REMEMBER! Do not confuse an infinitive with a prepositional phrase introduced by the preposition "to". REMEMBER! When the main word that follows "to" is a noun or a pronoun, "to" is a preposition with the noun or pronoun as its object. Together they form a PREPOSITIONAL PHRASE.
