Assignment Question 6: Waterfall vs Agile Methodology Elise Naccarato University of Fredericton MBA 5050 – Strategic Information Systems Planning Dr. James Bowen October 21, 2021 Assignment Question 6: Waterfall vs Agile Methodology The Waterfall methodology and the Agile methodology are two systems to approach the planning of execution on a given project. Like the terminologies assigned the Agile methodology provide a flexible for a project that allows for solutions to adapt as the situation demands. The steps also do not necessarily need to be completed in sequential order. The Waterfall methodology is more linear and requires greater planning before the project begins (Agile vs waterfall: What's the difference?, 2021). The steps do need to be completed sequentially when using the Waterfall method. As a result of the flexibility given by the Agile method, it is generally used as a methodology for more complex projects where in the Waterfall method is used for simpler projects. The most important considerations when determining which method to use for a given project is the desired deliverables, the timeline, and the team required to complete each given piece. One of the biggest differences between the two methodologies is the sequencing in which a project needs to be completed. For a project that requires a siloed approach where one part directly impacts the deliverables of the next, the Waterfall method is best undertaken. This will ensure there are clear deliverables, and nothing gets missed. In a project where teams can work simultaneously and all the information brought together near the end, the Agile method works well. An advantage to the agile method is its flexibility and the ability so shift and innovate as the project is underway. With this though can come lack of clear communication to changes, therefore, a system set up to track changes is crucial. References Agile vs waterfall: What's the difference?
