Theatre Final David Hawkins Structural Conventions Caroline meets Karlie and Peter at the hospital and takes Luna to investigate her home life. Caroline inspects Cindy’s home insearch for a place Luna can be taken care of and comes to the conclusion it is suitable. Peter and Karlie go to Caroline’s office to discuss what is next in order to get Luna back in their hands. The couple are tasked with going to counseling and not doing drugs. A few nights have past and Caroline meets Cindy with Pastor Jay at the Ranch home and it is revealed that Cindy wants to take full custody of Luna. Peter and Karlie’s apartment is investigated by Caroline and its state is determined to be unsuitable for Luna. Caroline tells the two that CIndy is planning to take full custody of Luna which is followed by her trying to bend the back story of Karlie’s past to stop the adoption process but unknowingly reveals a truth. Cliff and Pastor Jay enter Caroline’s office to try to strongarm her to understand their point of view and start the adoption process. Cliff ends up trying to use his power of authority over her and it backfires when he forces her to perform a religious prayer without her consent . During the court date it is revealed that Karlie did not pass her drug test and would not be able to take care of Luna. Karlie comes to the decision to abandon Peter and Luna. A month or two later, Peter is taking care of Luna while living with his father. Cliff and Caroline let bygones be bygones and settle their differences with him giving a recommendation for her to get a promotion and him starting a business of his own. Luna Gale’s plot is dynamic with the character’s moods and has a modern tragic ending allowing it to be categorized as a Modern Tragic Comedy. The play exhibits hubris moments between Peter and Luna, Cliff and Caroline, Peter and Karlie, expressing a feeling of comic relief. The ending has Karlie leaving Peter forcing him to take care of Luna alone without Karlie. The modern tragedy of two young adults who have become meth addicts caring for a child is a tragic rip in the American dream for today’s day in age. The subplot with Lourde leaving foster care and entering college leading her only to end up overdosing is a tragedy. Turning to drugs has been a common incident for foster kids to experience in the modern age. The plot of the story gives a dramatic mood seeing young meth addicts have their child taken away from them but the characters present situations in a matter of optimism spring comedy. The past will dictate who you are and how it allows you to treat people. The play Luna Gale is about an overworked social worker that helps children whose parents have neglected them and prevents them from continuing to hurt themselves. The story unfolds from Karlie doing drugs causing an improper environment for her daughter Luna to live in. Caroline unfolds the truth that just like Luna’s environment being abused, Karlie was sexually abused by her stepdad. Luna’s parent’s pursuit of drugs stemmed from both of them having their parents not be entirely there for them. The actions, relationships, and self care of people abused in childhood knocks their lives off course for a life of contentment. The play also looks into the power complex between employee and employer and corrupted decision making of budget cuts and it’s all about who you know. Luna Gale connects to real life with addiction, coping with life, and family issues. The events Caroline underwent have probably happened to social workers somewhere in the world. Dealing with people and forming bonds only for them to kill themselves can be hard to cope with even for the seasoned veteran. Addiction can be devastating to people’s mental and physical health as seen with Peter and Karlie. It is not uncommon for users addicted to drugs to have had a troubled past that they were unable to come to terms with leading them to use drugs as a means of dealing with the pain. Families are greatly affected by drug addicts in the real world. Having someone you love go down a path that degrades their health and life potential causes family issues all around. Luna Gale aligns with modern rules of conduct and social understanding. In the past it was overlooked when children were sexually abused by their parents but for today’s age it is an understood problem that causes implications now. The conduct of Cliff could be seen as going against the professional norms of the workplace when he was with Pastor Jay and Caroline in her office. Cliff forcing Caroline to perform a prayer with Pastor Jay goes against the freedom of religion not allowing for a professional workplace environment. Karlie and Peter using drugs is against the conduct of parents being responsible for a child which is why the state was sent in to correct them to the modern standard of parents raising children. Given Circumstances The location of the play is Cedar Rapids Iowa United States. Cedar Rapids is the second largest city in Iowa which resides next to the Cedar River. The city is a metropolitan resembling a smaller Denver Colorado with around 138,000 people. Cedar Creek’s economy is mainly driven by agriculture and the manufacturing of electronics. The play takes place several locations throughout the city and could be possible of including other residing cities. The hospital, the social worker’s office, Karlie and Peter’s apartment and Cindy’s house are most likely close to each other around the city and urban outskirts. Luna Gale takes place during the present around 2014-2015. The season the play took place during was not specifically mentioned or insinuated. To have it take place in the summer and or winter would not affect the story and different seasons could add diverging elements to the character’s outfits. The play took place within a two to three month time frame with the day hours ranging from morning to night. Having the play set at different times gives more of a day in the life and moment to moment appeal for the audience to witness the characters in and make the story more similar to life. There are various economic environments in the play including, Karlie and Peter’s dirty apartment depicting low income, the middle class of Cindy’s home, and the business bureaucratic office Caroline works in depicting middle class. Karlie and Peter have been indulging in drugs in their apartment, making the state of the apartment atrocious represents the low class standards the two meth users have even for a baby’s home. Cindy’s home is put together and is said to have a warm feeling to it. While Cindy is a workaholic, she has structured her home following her middle class ideals. Caroline’s office gives a middle class bureaucratic environment with fluorescent lights, paperwork and a desk. Caroline is in her late 40’s early 50’s and has been a social worker for a couple decades. Her wanting to become a social worker stemmed from a similar past to the cases that she now manages making her decide to want to help people. When she was little, her mother was an alcoholic which now promotes her fears of becoming one when she hits mental lows. She enjoys working with people and children alike but is often felt overworked and even overqualified for having worked for so long. Caroline feels that the workplace she is in does the best it can but bureaucracy fails those that are in need of help. Structure The inciting incident of the play is when Karlie is raped by her step father with Cindy turning a blindeye. When Karlie is raped by her step father, it sets in motion the resentment she has towards her mother and the way she treats herself. This resentment makes her also turn her back on the church that her mother was a part of. The sexual abuse and her mother turning a blindeye lead her to seek security else where and even go against Christian ideals and teachings. Doing drugs and having a baby with Peter stemmed from her lack of a supporting family when she was young. The drugs caused her to lose focus on reality and quit caring about the environment to which she would raise Luna. Luna was brought to the hospital because of a lack of care since both Peter and Karlie were too preoccupied with doing drugs. The point of attack of the play Luna Gale is Caroline meeting Karlie and Peter at the hospital. Caroline is the protagonist of the play and her story with Karlie and Peter begins at the hospital kickstarting the investigations to get them on track to recovery. Before meeting Peter and Karlie, Caroline was involved with a case with Lourde and most likely dealing with several other cases. The attack of the story at the hospital takes Luna from Karlie and Peter along with bringing Cindy to take care of her. The beginning with the hospital forced the characters involved with each other causing dynamics between them. With the ball rolling it exposed the truth of Karlie’s sexual abuse and Caroline’s overworked life under Cliff. The rising action starts with Caroline going to Cindy’s ranch home to evaluate if it is safe for Luna to be raised for the time being. Caroline then meets Karlie and Peter at her office to present her with their statement of not wanting Cindy to take care of Luna. Caroline then learns that Cindy, with the help of Pastor Jay's actual plan to take full custody and adopt Luna believing there is no hope for Karlie. Caroline forms a plan to bend the truth of Karlie’s past making it seem Cindy does not have a safe home but really reveals Karlie was sexually abused. From there, Caroline, Cliff, and Pastor Jay form a meeting to hash out Cindy adopting Luna from Karlie and Peter. The climax of the play is when Cliff and Caroline get into an argument, rising tension and the future of her career and a possible lawsuit, this is the tipping point if Karlie and Peter get Luna back from having her taken away. It is also unknown if Cliff might have something else up his sleeve to combat Caroline and the HR violations she has against him. This Climax is the pivotal point of the plot, having Cliff try to use his superiority over Caroline in an attempt to force her to go ahead and file the paperwork for adoption since Pastor Jay and him are friends. Cliff may be doing a friend a favor but he is not giving Karlie and Peter a fair chance within the system. During the meeting, Caroline gets a call from Lourde but Cliff explicitly tells her to not answer it thinking he knows better than her. Caroline, Peter, and Karlie work together in order to not have Cindy adopt Luna. Caroline works with Peter and Karlie to get them to have a better foundation for a child to be raised on. CIndy, The Priest and Cliff go on to balance out Caroline in her effort to get Luna back to Karlie and Peter. Caroline makes an attempt to bend Karlie’s back story, unknowing it was true to have the court view Cindy as a poor guardian. The Pastor gets Cliff on his side due to a prior friendship to use his authority to demand Caroline to write up the paperwork for Cindy to adopt. The conflict of the play is resolved with Karlie leaving Peter when she walks out of the courthouse and never mentioning where she was going and or why she was leaving. It is insinuated that Karlie’s past trauma makes her feel she is holding Peter back from his own potential of recovery. Peter ends up going to live with his Dad to take care of Luna together. Caroline and Cliff come to a better understanding of each other after Cliff sets out for a new venture and gives a recommendation for Caroline to be promoted. Caroline embraces the change of a new job and moving on from cases, she also gives Luna the white bear now instead of when she is 18 in hopes of taking a new approach with her work, and her life. Dramatic Action Luna Gale is a Representational acting style. The actors are not acknowledging the audience in any way throughout the play. The actors are playing the characters as they would be in a day in the life without any consideration of a fourth wall break. There are not any monologues or soliloquies that could instigate the character talking to themselves or the audience like with Shakespere’s Hamlet. The audience is one of the many flies in Karlie and Peter’s apartment observing the chaos unfolding while Caroline tries to file it accordingly. Compared to an presentational acting style like in Hamlet when the to be or not to be monologue takes place, Hamlet is speaking to himself but is acknowledging a presence of the unknown such as god or to the universe observing letting his thoughts be known. The plot of Luna Gale starts with Luna getting sick forcing Peter and Karlie to take her to the hospital. Caroline is called to investigate Peter and Karlie on the suspicion of an improper home for Luna with a possible case of neglect. After taking Luna, Caroline stakes out a home for Luna at Cindy’s home where Karlie grew up. Caroline sets up a meeting for Karlie and Peter and finds them therapists and tries to book them into rehab in order to have them regain their custody of Luna. In another case, Caroline meets with Lourde to discuss her future going to college. When going to Cindy’s house Caroline is informed that Cindy wants to adopt Luna thinking there won’t be any hope for Karlie and her recovery. Caroline, Peter and Karlie, work together against Cindy and the Pastor to not have Luna taken from her biological parents. Caroline devises a plan to forge Karlie’s backstory to say she was raped by her stepfather in order to not allow Cindy to adopt Luna which ends up being the truth. Cliff and Pastor Jay try to persuade Caroline to start the adoption papers. Cliff but she ends up having a leg up based on an HR perspective. Caroline felt that Cliff forced her to pray with the pastor which she used against him in HR and that he was only on Cindy’s and The Pastor’s side due to them sharing the same faith. While talking with Cliff and the Pastor, Caroline gets a phone call from Lourdes but is forced to silence it by Cliff. Caroline then finds out that Lourdes overdosed and was left outside of the hospital. At the courthouse a month later, Caroline talks to Karlie about her drug test that she failed; Karlie decides that it is best for her to leave Peter who had remained sober since she was the one that introduced him to meth. Peter starts living with his dad to take care of Luna but Karlie’s location is unknown. Caroline gets a recommendation for promotion from Cliff who is leaving to start a business of his own which settles their differences and they come to an understanding with each other. The play Luna Gale has a casual dramatic structure because it follows a traditional and linear organization of the play. The play would not be a climatic structure since the story is within a few months and not just a few hours or days. It is not a serial structure since the story follows a continuous storyline with cause and effect. Nor would it be considered a circular structure play since if one were to compare the situation the characters were at in the beginning- Karlie and Peter in a relationship, Luna being sick, Karlie’s past unrevealed - to how it was at the end - Karlie leaving Peter, Peter taking care of Luna at his dad’s residence and Caroline getting promoted to a higher position. Characters Caroline is a deconstructed character type because her work as a social worker has formed her identity into that of the Bureau's ideals. It is seen that she is breaking free of these chains that were trying to form her mind when coming up with bending the truth of Karlie’s past. She is even tested by her boss Cliff to see if she is conforming correctly to the system’s requirements when he asks her about her work. There are really two different social orders Caroline has followed in the play. The first social order includes real ethics such as her trying everything she can to give Karlie and Peter a fighting chance in being Luna’s parents. The second social order is the government job making cuts and having people above her revolving their decisions based on cronyism or bias to some degree. Karlie is a psychological character since her prior past with her mother and step father formed the way she thinks, treats herself, and the relationships that she holds. Karlie is full of interest for the audience since her story about her past with her step father could not be foreseen except by Caroline who has a subconscious knowledge about people with a psychological past. Karlie’s motivation to leave Peter came from her biological dad leaving her and her mom when she was young. Karlie’s action of using drugs was a means of getting rid of the pain she felt by her mother looking the other way to her step dad being sexually abusive to her. Karlie left Peter and Luna in response to how she felt about her own mother failing her and she did not want to not give Luna a bad mother like she had. Peter is a deconstructed character in the larger scope when it is revealed that he only tried meth because of Karlie. His social order was that of Karlie’s and what she was doing throughout the years they were together. Peter even backs Karlie and her not wanting Luna to be taken care of by Cindy without justified reason except that Karlie doesn’t want Christian ideals being fed to her. It lacked reason not wanting these ideals given to Luna even though she is a baby and the teachings won't be comprehensible for her for years. Peter really did love Karlie which was his downfall since he would follow her to the moon and back even with drugs. It could be connected that Peter saw Karlie as the mother that left him at home all alone for all those years, her coming over filled the hole his mother created. Pastor Jay follows a stock character type in the story. He is a Pastor at the church Cindy attends. His attire is that of a Pastor throughout the play following the standard garment a member of the priesthood would usually follow. His dialogue and personality follows a stock script similar to drawing inside the lines type. Pastor Jay has the name of who he is and what kind of person, personality, and even tells somewhat of his past and future. Pastor Jay is defined by the church in which he serves in the name of god. The actor playing Cliff will be played by Denzel Washington for a strong male role and to harbor a direct dialogue character with focused emotions. Denzel Washington has played many serious roles, for him to play Cliff can add depth to the character. Cliff being played by Denzel Washington steps the character up to a more serious role while not compromising what comic relief that could be thrown his way. At the end Cliff was seeking new ventures and Denzel Washington has a motivational speaking mindset within him. Caroline will be played by Halle Berry who is by now middle aged and can give a powerful strong woman with conflicting thoughts within her. Halle Berry has been an actress for several decades, this connects with Caroline having to work as a social worker this amount of time too. Halle Berry was homeless for a short period of time and that impact could help her develop Caroline’s character having a troubled past. Having Halle Berry play Caroline will have the audience take the role more seriously since she is a tenured actress. Caroline and Cliff have a power dynamic that can be taken advantage of by casting Halle Berry with Denzel Washington with their acting methods. Karlie will be played by Millie Bobby Brown, a young enough actress to play the role and hopefully captivate a younger audience who appreciate her prior work. Millie Bobby Brown is young enough to be playing the 19 year old Karlie, her child acting skills can come into action if playing a flashback for Karlie’s past. This actress has different kinds of acting methods and can encapsulate Karlie and her meth addiction. This role would help Millie Bobby Brown with her career by adding a degraded character such as Karlie who does not have a picture perfect life nor behavior. Peter will be played by Finn Wolfhard who is tall, slender, and is seen with his co-star Millie Bobby Brown in Stranger Things. The actors playing Peter and Karlier were picked because they are more established in the film industry as young adults and young adult audiences can sympathize with them. Finn Wolfhard is a very thin actor which aligns with Peter’s character since he smokes meth and does not make healthy eating habits. As with his role in Stranger Things, Finn Wolfhard can be very attached to his girlfriend suiting him to play Peter’s character who is attached to Karlie. Finn Wolfhard has played a character in the picket white fence family but for this role he will need to step into an independent young man that too has a child to take care of while battling a meth addiction. This role will not have a deeper conscious thought as Peter was focused on either Karlie or Luna and nothing else but those two. Symbolic elements The white stuffed bear that Caroline gives to Luna and Lourdes symbolizes the gamble of life. Caroline is a social worker but tries her best to the abilities of the state to help minors and adults get their life on track. Although Caroline would think to expect after helping these kids to have a stable life, she well knows that it is a gamble for them not to have their past affect their future. The bear symbolizes the gamble that these kids are challenged with from their past bestowed upon by their circumstances. The clipboard Caroline holds symbolizes judgment. Caroline would use the clipboard to check off the things the state deemed unfit for a child during both the inspection of Karlie and Peter’s apartment along with Cindy’s home. The clipboard symbolized judgment with even a simple check being a good or bad thing, a list of what should be and what shouldn’t. The clipboard has had to judge hundreds of cases Caroline was working on throughout the years. Clipboards allow the judgment of the mind to be put onto paper and taken anywhere that is needed. The superiority complex between worker and boss takes place between Cliff and Caroline is a major theme throughout the play. Although Cliff is not as qualified nor tenured as Caroline he thinks that since he has the title that he knows more just from the given authority. This boss and worker complex has caused problems since the beginning of time and can be compared to slavery if the power has gone to the boss’s head. Cliff tried to pull the boss card with Caroline for Pastor Jay in Caroline's office. Cliff is only on Cindy’s side because he knew Pastor Jay from the past and he thinks that since he is Caroline’s boss that he can go ahead and make her do as he says. Sexual abuse during formative years brings hardships later in life is a major theme in Luna Gale. As seen with Karlie, the sexual abuse when she was fifteen brought forth the her way of thinking and the events that would cause her to start doing drugs and eventually leaving Peter. Sexual abuse brought a lack of trust in Karlie with herself and her mother. Cindy did not believe that Karlie’s stepfather would ever do such a thing and turning a blind eye on Karlie only left her to fend for herself emotionally. If Karlie was never sexually abuse and or had her mother on her side then her life would have been brighter and she would not have to emulate relationship patterns such as her turning a blindeye on Peter being the same thing her mother did to her. People vs people is a major recurring conflict in the Play Luna Gale. The people vs people conflict is imminent between Caroline with Cliff and Peter and Karlie throughout the story. Cliff keeps testing Caroline about her job and even insinuates that she may be crooked with her work and that she maybe is hiding things for her benefit. Cliff also has a bias towards Priest Jay and pushes Caroline to perform a religious practice in a professional office but Caroline finds an edge and uses it against Cliff. Caroline’s progress on the case keeps getting obstructed by Cliff. Although Karlie loves Peter, She sees that he truly does care about the situation and wants to better himself for Luna. Karlie makes haste without any conflicting ideas and leaves Peter when she comes to the conclusion that Peter is better off without her. Peter’s goal of becoming sober and starting a healthy family with Karlie is obstructed when Karlie decides to leave him. People vs themselves is a major conflict in the Play Luna Gale. Caroline is having to face the struggle within herself of becoming an alcoholic like her mother. Caroline has had many encounters that have made her want to pick up a drink and self indulge in alcohol. These encounters/situations include her coworker killing herself, Lourde overdosing and her work past being investigated by Cliff. These internal struggles can sometimes make her want to pick up the bottle but in the end she does realize the increased risk of alcoholism she carries with her and makes an effort to power through it. Caroline - “You are! You all are. But there are so many of you and you just keep coming and I can’t seem to slow it down so I can figure out how to save you or even just keep you alive long enough to … have a life. That’s all. Just have a life” This quote from Caroline embodies the accumulation of her working as a social worker. The people that needed her help sometimes couldn’t be saved even with the best of her ability. The work, the system, the chaos that she found these people in was similar to an unstoppable train. Caroline knows that she can’t save everyone, as seen with Lourde, she put all her best efforts in helping her but for just missing a phone call she ended up overdosing. The overwork and the chaos pouring over those in need is an unstoppable train that started moving long ago with immense momentum destined for a collision course. The objective for Caroline is to help these children from their past as well as their parents, but sometimes with all the help in the world it won’t matter since it’s really up to them - she can only help those who want to help themselves. Design A proscenium stage arrangement would be best suited for the play Luna gale. Although a more traditional arrangement, the play can benefit by having all the cards laid out on the table. Cards being different scenes the actors are in. Such as while the scene of Caroline in her office is taking place, the audience can still see Karlie and Peter in the background of a different room doing their own thing. This proscenium allows for the space for a theatrical vision to take place. Other play stages would not be able to do this such as the thrust stage, which would be unsuited for a play that is mainly for dialogue whilst a play with action may benefit. The aesthetic distance will be increased with this stage layout since the audience can see and understand better what the other characters are doing while the main scene is taking place. Scenes should be dark and grim in Karlie and Peter’s home aligning with the meek and meth addict lifestyle. Once the play progresses, Karlie and Peter’s apartment can become brighter and warmer to show their steps to recovery for Luna. Having a bright fluorescent light could be used for scenes in Caroline’s office to establish a bureaucratic and business setting and heighten the disconnect between the bureau’s task to help people but their real task of just filling out forms. Warm and light colors can be used for scenes in Cindy’s home but can progressively get more and more darker and grim like Karlie and Peter’s apartment in the beginning. The changing from warm and fuzzy light to a grim and dark light style in Cindy’s home will elaborate her loss of a hopeful future for Karlie and Peter. The actor playing Peter will be wearing clothes similar to Jesse Pinkman in Breaking bad - Skull Beanie, XL zip up jacket, oversized pants. These clothes can bring out the junky style that many Meth addicts tend to adopt. Peter will eventually start wearing his Autozone uniform but will transition to cleaner clothes similar to when he was younger getting back in touch with the style he once had. The clothes that we see Peter wearing at the end include clothes similar to his dad such as jeans and maybe a polo. Peter used to be following Karlie in the past but now that she is gone can have his dad as a role model allowing him to adopt his dad style. The actor playing Karlie will be wearing her work uniform mainly for her job at the dinner. On and off she will be wearing dark black jeans that have rips and stains along with an oversized jacket similar to Peter’s. Karlie will have a darker and gothic style with dirty converse shoes. Her clothes will have wrinkles to show that she doesn’t exactly do laundry every week. Her clothes will not have much of a change through the play like Peter since she does end up using meth again showing that she is not on a road to recovery. Since Karlie and Peter live together, I am sure she will be wearing some of his clothes as well. The actor playing Caroline will have a put together business formal outfit that’s almost a power suit but made of wool with flat bottom dress shoes. Since Caroline is in her late 40s early 50s then she may even have less of a motivation to over dress than those younger than her in the beginning. Caroline has needed to follow the bureaucratic look for multiple decades which has formed the habit to dress up to par to the professional look even off work. Her off work clothes are more conservative and structured such as a sweater along with slacks and flat bottom shoes with her hair down with no strays almost like going to church even though she is not religious. This case makes Caroline think about herself and her similar past to Karlie’s which makes her expand her style from more traditional look to a modern business woman at the end. The actor playing Pastor Jay will be wearing a sweater vest with dress shirt and slacks, and a crucifix following a Christian structured lifestyle. His blue leather shoes will be polished to an almost mirror-like finish trying to emulate Jesus walking on water . In the scene with Cliff and Caroline in her office he will be wearing a sash with a crucifix embroidered on it hoping to prove a point that he is a man of god when fighting for Cindy to adopt Luna. The Pastor will have a bald spot to show his age and his hair will be long with an almost curly mullet. Isn’t she lovely by Stevie Wonder - This song will help encompass and express the love parents have for their children. The song fits well because Luna is a girl and the play is based around her similar to the song being focused around Stevie Wonder’s daughter. The song will set the audience up to think the story will be warm and fuzzy but once the curtains are drawn, they may assume a baby was born but really there is a sick baby with two not so put together parents. The song will elude the opposite of the play beginning with the thought that there are normal parents with a child that they love but it will be revealed the parents don’t even love themselves with a baby needing to be loved. These Boots are Made for Walking by Nancy Sinatra will be the post show song. The song can describe Karlie leaving Peter because she knows Peter loves her more than what she thinks she is worth. The song also fits and describes Caroline finally moving on with the hardships of being a caseworker. Caroline had to deal with constant chaos and the song describes her respect and her power of dealing with it. The audience may see the poster of the play and begin to think the main character is the baby Luna but really it is about Caroline having to deal with the depreciation of people and her job of trying to hold the strings of people’s lives together . With this song playing at the end it will tie into the winning of her war.
