Globalization is the process which has connected the whole globe into one entity for trade,
commerce, investment of capital, free movement of goods, services, and people. Jack Welch said
and I quote, “Globalization has changed us into a company that searches the world, not just to sell
or source but to find intellectual capital”. Thus, Globalization has influenced the world in many
different ways, It’s a cycle which links every process such as from manufacturing to selling the
product nationally and internationally. This can be a product or service or it can be the form of
human resource or capital. It has changed the business procedures in terms of psychological,
methodological, technological, cultural, and in term of work mindset of individuals. After all, this
change has brought us many advantages and eased our lives.
Globalization is influencing leadership because of the way it affects society through its processes.
Because the transformations brought about by globalization are not always easy to identify
precisely and promptly, they may be hard to take in and even where they are detected, be hard to
cope with. Globalization has caused changes in the political, social, and economical aspects and
therefore the scope can be considered wide. These changes affect organizations in a diverse
number of ways and leaders need to analyze them effectively before responding. Globalization has
affected the organization’s culture, work structure, and even people, and is forcing leaders to
realign their decision-making process as well as how they respond to issues. Because an
organization is a constituent of society, it is influenced by the changing factors in society.
What competencies do global leaders need to acquire?

Strategic Perspective. These executives have a much clearer view of the future of the
company. Their deep industry and culture knowledge enables them to be much better at
anticipating market and economic trends. They take a longer-term view of the business
and the market, as well as taking the broad strategy and translating it into meaningful goals
and objectives in their organizations.

Customer Focus and Understanding. The best global leaders understand their customers’
needs, concerns, and problems. They often view themselves as partners in assisting their
customers to accomplish their goals and objectives. Customers trust these individuals and
therefore trust the business.

Ability to Spot Trends and Connect the Dots. Colleagues describe them as being able to
“see around the corner.” Looking at the same data that others have available, the best global
executives were able to identify issues that others pass by or ignore. For example, one
executive in Mexico noticed that monthly revenue had declined. He had seen variations
before so this was not unexpected. Nevertheless, this seemed different. He called a few
friends in other companies and asked if they had seen the same trend. To his surprise all
had observed the trend but thought nothing of it. After consulting with several economists
and other company financial executives he called and indicated that he was going to delay
a planned expansion. While he did not know it at the time, he had predicted a significant
economic slowdown.

Willingness to Take Risks. The best global executives are willing to take risks and to
capitalize on unrealized potential. They also recognize others in their organization for
taking appropriate risks.

Deep Knowledge and Expertise. International business today is complex both because of
technology and the difficulties of doing business around the world. These executives are
viewed as some of the most knowledgeable and experienced in their industry. They
understand all aspects of the businesses that they run.
