Lilian Santos Gomez EDC 103 11/1/2022 Professor Sagna One page response The two articles that were assigned talked about segregation in schools and how they affect housing. When people think about segregation, they think back to when the civil rights movement and when segregation was a common thing. But there still is segregation going on even though it might seem like there isn’t. In the article “The Interdependence of Housing and School Segregation” by Anurima Bhargava talks about how segregation affects how neighborhoods are created and who lives in them. In the article it says, “To keep African American families from moving into white neighborhoods, localities would “plac[e] the only schools that served African American children in designated African American neighborhoods and provid[e] no transportation for African American students who lived elsewhere.” They made sure predominantly African American neighborhoods had a school designated for them and didn’t give bussing to other African Americans who lived outside the area so they can move to these predominantly POC neighborhoods and keep them away from the white population. I think this still takes place today, not as bad or as noticeable as back then but it’s still a problem. I know from personal experience growing up that city tend to separate neighborhoods and you can tell who might live where just by looking at the condition of the housing and the businesses around the neighborhood.
