Summary:
This article talks about the time when the covid 19 pandemic has just started and how emotional
Intelligence helps to conquer that. This article compares the relationship between leadership and
emotional intelligence, how they complement each other. The study was based on the students,
faculty members, staff, and the leader of the institution of Urban College in New York, how they
tackle the pandemic by using their own emotions. Emotional intelligence is nothing but are
parameter to read the surrounding people's emotions and try to solve them. Leaders of the
institution manage to continue the classes, helps to interact with the teachers and students during
the pandemic when lots of people at that time were losing their jobs and the worldwide education
system was closed, which completely shows that the leaders of that institution have a certain
degree of emotional intelligence to cope with difficult situations. A new education system has
been implemented with a better learning platform (computer-mediated distance learning) which
was a plus point for both the teachers and students to engage. He has given a great example of
social management which is one of the areas of EIs by interacting via telephone or emails with
the entire UDC community. Teaching students and making them aware of the condition will be
able to know how turning emotions during pandemics can impact their own performance. Those
who have high emotional intelligence were never harming the other’s life. All the four models of
EIs had been applied by the leaders:
1. Manage their own emotions for the betterment of their institution
2. Understanding the emotions of both students and employs
3. Using the emotions to facilitate thinking
4. perceiving the emotion accurately in oneself and others.
Here, the leaders have perceived the emotions accurately in themselves and others so that they
came up with ideas that are fruitful for all the members to engage them in some activities when
the whole world was emotionally disturbed. Self-awareness is the ability to recognize your own
emotion and of the surrounding people, empathy is able to understand other emotion, motivation
is all about doing what makes you feel good and working to achieve the goals, self-regulation
always allows you to manage your emotions wisely, and social skills provide benefits to
everyone that are involved in are shown in the leaders by the writer.
Reaction:
I completely agree with the thoughts that have been put on the topic of emotional intelligence in
the article. EIs are not the fix things but with change in time and experience, they can be
developed within ourselves. Emotional intelligence helps to enhance communication skills and
problem-solving which have clearly explained in the article. Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, most
of the leaders have come up with new ideas for the betterment of the future and to cope with the
stress that people were facing at that time. During this quarantine, most people have developed
emotional intelligence within themselves.
