SELF-AWARENESS Who am I?: An Introduction to Self-Awareness • Simply put, self-awareness is an awareness of the self, with the self-being what makes one’s identity unique. These unique components include thoughts, experiences, and abilities. WHAT IS SELF-AWARENESS? ❖ It is defined as a clear perception of your personality, including strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivation, and emotions. ❖ It allows you to understand other people, how they perceive you, your attitude and your responses to them in the moment. ❖ Psychologists believe that people who have high self-awareness are MORE SECURE than people who are not sure of their capabilities and gifts. ❖ McCarthy, A. and Caravan, T. (1999) study showed that one of the keys to managerial success is self-awareness. ❖ Silva, P. (2010) revealed that self-awareness is the regulator of emotion. Self-awareness affect our happiness. ❖ Duva, T. and Silva, P. (2002) predicted that success and failure attribution are moderated by self-awareness and by the ability to improve on. THE FOUNDATION OF SELF-AWARENESS ❖ Personality – Who you are ❖ Strengths – What you’re good at ❖ Weaknesses – What are your limits ❖ Self – Image – How you see yourself ❖ Beliefs – What you think ❖ Choices – What you do ❖ Association with Others – Who you are with/ How are you with others ❖ The Perception of Others – How they see you SELF-AWARENESS IS AN ISSUE OF: ❖ Know yourself - This is a reality issue. ❖ Change yourself - This is a responsibility issue. ❖ Accept yourself - This is a maturity issue. ❖ Forget yourself -This is a security issue. THE IMPORTANCE OF SELF-AWARENESS ❖ It empowers you to make changes and build on your areas of strength and identify areas where you would like to make improvements. ❖ It helps you create what you want and master your feelings, behavior and actions. ❖ It is often a first step to goal setting. HOW LIMITS AND LIMITATIONS WORK? ❖ Restrict you from getting what you want out of life. ❖ Hinder you in bringing the BEST in you. (Prevent you to MASTER your own feelings, behavior and actions which is your first step in goal setting.) ❖ Affect your behavior and disposition. (Our behavior was created 5 to 10 years ago.) Example: Experiments on fish (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute) WAYS TO DEVELOP YOURSELF ❖ Be responsible for your actions ❖ Avoid negative people ❖ Read autobiography of successful people ❖ Attend seminars/ workshops ❖ Join and participate in school or community organization/s and activities ❖ Balance your time between Personal and Academic ❖ Offer help to people EXAMPLE OF SELF-AWARENESS ACTION PLAN
