Skeletal System Anatomy The skeletal system in an adult body is made up of 206 individual bones. These bones are arranged into two major divisions: the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton. Human vertebral column There are normally thirty-three (33) vertebrae in humans, including cervical (7 vertebrae), thoracic (12 vertebrae) lumbar (5 vertebrae) five that are fused to form the sacrum four that are fused to form coccygeal bones Joints: The place where two bones meet is called a joint. Including: Ball & Socket (shoulders & hips) Hinge (knee & elbow) Saddle (thumb or phalanges ) Ellipsoid (Carpus) Pivot (neck) Gliding (tarsals / metatarsals) Skull 28 irregular shaped bones form the skull, the skull consists of three major division: Eight bones form cranium. Fourteen bones form face. Six bone form auditory ossicles. Cranium: its consist of 8 bones Frontal (1) Parietal (2) Temporal (2) Sphenoid (1) Ethmoid (1) Occipital (1) Facial bones: its consist of 14 bones Nasal (2) Maxillae (2) Lacrimal (2) Zygomatic (2) Palatines (2) Conchae (2) Vomer (1) Mandible (1) auditory ossicles: it consist of 6 bones 1. Incus (2) 2. Malleus (2) 3. Stapes (2) Sutures There are four Immovable joints called sutures form boundaries between skull bones: • Coronal : between (frontal and parietal bones) • Sagittal :between (parietal bones) • Lambdoidal :between (Occipital and parietal bones) • Squamous : between (Temporal and parietal bones)
