To enhance teachers’ teaching strategies
on reading comprehension.
After the session, the participants will
be able to understand the following:
1. What is reading comprehension?
2. Why it is reading with comprehension
is important?
3. How do we enhance reading
comprehension of our learners?

What is comprehension?
Comprehension is a crucial goal of reading
instruction. Any approach to language arts thar does
not include a strong comprehension component has
an intolerable weakness. Comprehension instruction
must be deliberate, intensive, and direct. It cannot be
left to chance or limited to shallow questioning during
or after reading . Comprehension instructions must be
planned and organized. Comprehension strategies can
be used with fiction and nonfiction materials.
Instruction occur in small groups and whole class
setting.
Why is it comprehension is important
Importance of Comprehension
• Increase effectiveness of reading and helps
not only academically but professionally also.
• Comprehension construct meaning from the
text.
• Pupils cannot master complex scientific
concept without comprehension.
• Skilled readers don’t just read the text, they
interact with the text
• Comprehension increase reading speed.
• Helps pupils to ace the standardized state test.
• This ability help to accurately interpret and
analyze written information.
• It make us extract main idea and draw
conclusion from text.
Types of Comprehension skills
• Literal comprehension
Basic understanding of the story or
information
• Interpretative comprehension
•
Taking the information from the text and
using either background knowledge or
information from other sources or even other
parts of the text to come to the answer. It is
also known as inferential comprehension.
• Critical comprehension
Using the reader’s opinion and judgement to
answer the questions. The answer is not directly in
the story and has to be brought together.
• Creative comprehension
creating new ideas or connecting emotions
with the book. It required the reader to move
beyond the basic and make connections based on
their own life.
How do we enhance comprehension
skills of our learners?
The process of comprehending
text begins before children can read,
when someone reads picture book to
them. They listen to the words, see the
pictures in the book, and may start to
associate the words on the page wih
the words they are hearing and the
ideas they represent.
In order to learn comprehension strategies,
learners need modelling practice and feedback.
The key comprehension srategies are the
following:
1. Using Prior knowledge/previewing
2. Predicting
3. Identifying the main idea an summarization.
4. Questioning
5. Making inferences
6. Visualizing
