PODCUT (Episode 1) Vocabulary notes from “We have to fail sometimes (part 2)” 1. Endeavor (noun) An attempt to do something Eg: His endeavors for the country should be rewarded. 2. Go on something (phrasal verb) To use social media Eg: Don’t go on Twitter. Everything you see will be people arguing about politics. 3. Scroll through (phrasal verb) To move the text up or down to find the information that you need. Eg: Scroll through the document till you come to page three. 4. To a certain extent (idiom) Used to say how true something is or how great an effect or change is. (It is partly but not completely true.) Eg: We are all responsible for climate change to a certain extent. 5. Deep down (idiom) used to mean that something is true or real even if it is not said or shown to other people Eg: Deep down, I know you love me really. 6. From scratch (idiom) from the beginning without using anything that already exists. Eg: I learned German from scratch in six months. 7. Showcase (something) - (verb) To show the best qualities of something Eg: Jack found a film role that showcased all his talents. 8. At the end of the day (idiom) After everything else has been considered Eg: At the end of the day I'm responsible for what happens in school. 9. Challenging (adjective) Difficult in a way that tests your ability Eg: It's very challenging to find a job in this city. 10. Right off the bat (idiom) Immediately; straight away Eg: You can't expect to be accepted in a new town right off the bat. 11. Shut out (something) - (verb) To block something from the mind Eg: She finds it impossible to shut out the memory of the accident. 12. Take (something) with a grain of salt (idiom) To be careful about believing that something is completely true. Eg: If I were you, I’d take everything he says with a grain of salt. 13. Keep (something) to oneself (phrasal verb) To keep something secret Eg: I don't want everyone to know, so if you could keep it to yourself I'd appreciate it. 14. Broadcast (something) - (verb) To tell a lot of people about something Eg: I don’t like to broadcast the fact that my father owns the company. 15. Discipline (noun) = စည်းကမ် း The ability to control yourself or other people, even in difficult situations. Eg: She keeps good discipline in class. 16. Subconscious (adjective) = မသိစိတ်န ဲ ဆိ ့ ု င်သော Connected with feelings that influence your behavior even though you are not aware of them. Eg: I can’t control my subconscious desire to eat desserts even though I’m on a diet now. 17. Accordingly (adverb) In a way that is suitable and right for the situation. Eg: When we receive your instructions, we will act accordingly.
