Media play a significant role in our world. Today, as we are living in the 21 st Century, our
life would be incomplete without media. It consists of television, Internet, cinema, newspapers,
radio, magazines, direct mail, fax, and the telephone. But as media became a part of our lives, it
has affected us in many ways. It helps make communication and the distribution of information
much easier. But that’s not all, for it also have adverse effects especially to the youth.

The world of media is very useful but dangerous at the same time. Filipino teenagers tend
to engage in different forms of media without thinking the possible effects of it to their lives.
Media emerged into social media which Filipino youth had been using nowadays. We cannot
deny the fact that media has been continuously shaping our lives as young individuals. It is
through media that we get most of the information that we need to help us in our studies. It is a
big help for us, students, for it helps answer questions, provides information needed and educates
us in many ways. Another more obvious example of how beneficial media is how it connects
people worldwide. It enables us to stay connected of what is happening around us without
physical meetings. But since the use of media became popular to youth, it caused them some of
the dangers of it. As the Global Media Journal said, “Filipino youth today are more the products
of mass media rather than their genes or school, or least of all, their homes.”. It simply means that
as the evolution of media occur, it has also affected youth in bad ways. Example of this is the
television which has the potential to generate both positive and negative effects since youth tend
to believe easily what they see and do such things without thinking the possible consequences.
Many teenagers spend nights without sleep using social media which affects their health and
performance in school. Media violence has also been increasing and may influence teens that are
prone to it. It also caused the youth to be more anti-social because they are always glued to their
phone, affects their physical activities and lessens the time they spend with their family.
Media literacy is important to youth since we are prone to the dangers of media. In the
modern world we are living today, the use of media is inevitable for it became a part of our life.
And since it is associated with both positive and negative effects, we must be responsible users
of it. The right use of media depends on how responsible, aware, and well informed we are. As
media evolves and the availability of it, we must learn to adapt and use it responsibly. Let’s all be
media literate.

Ina country where the use of technology is growing, communication and transmitting information
has been much easier for us teenagers.
“Filipino youth today are more the products of mass media rather than their genes or
school, or least of all, their homes.”
-The Global Media Journal
Whether it may be waking up in the morning or before going to bed at night, it has been a habit to
check our phones. Many teenagers spend nights without sleep using social media which affects
their health and performance in school. Media violence has also been increasing and may
influence teens that are prone to it.
We can’t deny that media has been continuously shaping our lives as young individuals. Filipino

While media may have these numerous negative effects to Filipino teenagers, it can also provide
us with multiple benefits. The right use of media depends on how responsible, aware, and well
informed we are. If Filipino teenagers are to be given proper education on the fair use of media,
this could lessen the effects brought by it.

Since we are now living in 21st Century modern technology and media has now evolved.
Technology emerges in various things and ways. One specific example is smart phones. It is the
basic and fundamental source of information and communication of people nowadays. Media
also emerged into social media which Filipino Youth had been using nowadays. But sadly, the
effects of media to the Filipino Youth had been unpredictable since it has been developed couple
of years ago. Media has changed our culture in significant ways since first becoming popular in
the early 1900’s with the introduction of the radio. A lot has changed since then, and society
today has experienced many new creations. One of the newest is social media. Social
media, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter just to name a few, has made its way into the homes of
people young and old.
The benefits of these programs are plentiful. For example, some people use social media for
motivation to get healthy with applications such as Fitbit, Jawbone or Map My Run. Another
more obvious example is how it connects people to other people worldwide and to local and
global affairs.Though beneficial, there is concern that social media can lead to negative behavior
in Filipino Youth. There is where most begin to wonder what age is appropriate to begin use, and
how does one prevent harmful media from “working its magic?” Researchers believe that there
are things parents should be aware of and tips they should consider when their children open
their own accounts. Television has the potential to generate both positive and negative effects,
and many studies have looked at the impact of television on society, particularly on children and
adolescents. An individual child’s developmental level is a critical factor in determining whether
the medium will have positive or negative effects. Not all television programs are bad, but data
showing the negative effects of exposure to violence, inappropriate sexuality and offensive
language are convincing.
Behavioural scientist Steven Martino, shared some interesting research findings on this topic.

The more sexual content that kids see on television, the earlier they initiate sexual
activity, the more likely they are to regret their early sexual experiences, and the more likely they
are to have an unplanned teen pregnancy.
There is a strong causal connection between youth exposure to violence in the media and
violent or aggressive behavior and thoughts.
Kids are exposed to nearly 300 alcohol commercials per year. Similarly, more than 80
percent of movies depict alcohol use.
The motives movie characters convey for smoking can adversely affect adolescents’ realworld smoking risk.

However, Martino offered concrete solutions for concerned parents.

“You’re not going to be able to keep your kids from seeing these things, so you should start
having conversations with them very early on.”
First, they can restrict how much media their kids, particularly young children, consume. This
may mean limiting television hours or internet access. Second, parents should monitor their
children in order to ensure proper use, both for content and for time spent. Children are getting in
touch with social media at a much younger age. Whether it is online gaming or social sites, most
children begin to create their own accounts when they are nine years old. This age is crucial,
however, in adolescent life.

At this stage, they are learning how to balance their days and interact with others. In fact,
research has shown that electronic stimulation affects sleep and mood behavior for children. That
being said, it is important for parents to monitor their usage.
As social media expands and the availability of it grows our society must learn to adapt. It is
expected that Filipino Youth will be curious, but it’s important for their mental and physical sake
that there are limits and guidelines to be followed.

Social media have become part of life for many young people today. Most people engage with
social media without stopping to think what the effects are on our lives, whether positive or
negative. Are we as a society becoming more concerned with Facebook “friends” than we are
with the people we interact with face-to-face in our daily lives? What will the longterm effects of
today’s social media use be?

such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram has positive effect on youth but equally it has negative

The social media websites has effected youth in a way that it is considered to be a great source
for professionals. They can be used as a source to start a new business or any profession. For
example if a friend is looking to get hired for a job and he posted a status on his profile, so any
other friend who know any job related to him, he can send him couple of messages on his profile
and that’s how it benefit people. They are many other positive aspects of these social networking
websites. It may help in strengthening the relationships between the young generations. There are
lots of people who don’t see their friends for so long. These social websites are a way where they
can be connected again. They can connect with the friends no matter they are how long away
from them. It has reduced distances. Just by one click and there you go. Send friend request, on
the other end your friend will accept it and start chatting. Social networking sites has helped

There are negative impacts of social media on youth as well. One of the negative impacts is
cyber bullying, which is very common now a days on internet. This is commonly occurs on the
sites of social media. Cyber bulling is basically an electronic base communication to tyrant a
person, most often by sending threatening messages. There are also videos on social networking
websites that shows violence, these videos could lead to affect the behavior of teens. By
watching violence they became more aggressive, their behavior with their family changes and
their minds become assertive, this could ultimately affect their living in the society. Another
negative impact of social networking sites on younger generation is that these sites don’t have
strict privacy, many of the personal information has been shared publically. Many of the youth
don’t know about the privacy policy of any blog and they don’t actually know that this
information will be disclosed to the other persons like advertisements.
