They connect capitals of States, ports, foreign highways, large towns and industrial centers. They can be deemed to be the primary road network of the country.” 4 2.State Highways (S.H.): “These roads are the main arteries of traffic within a State, serving important cities, and connected to the National Highway system and important highways of adjacent States.” Major district roads(MDR) MDR are important road within district .Serving areas of production ,markets and connecting them to main highway of district. • Lower design specification than State Highway. OTHER district roads (odr) These road are serving rural areas of production and providing them outlet to market and connecting those to taluka head quarters, other main roads. • Lower design specification than MDR. Village Roads (V.R.) These roads connect villages and groups of villages with another and to market places and district roads. Modified Road Classified System Modified Road Classified System has been suggested in Lucknow Road Plan. It is as under : (A) Primary system (1) Expressways (2) National Highways (B) Secondary system (1) State Highways (2) Major District Roads (C) Tertiary system 1) Other District Roads (2) Village Roads. 9 CLASSIFICATION OF URBAN ROADS IN INDIA In India, urban roads are classified into the following classes : 1. Expressways 2. Arterial Streets 3. Sub-arterial Streets 4. Collector Streets 5. Local Streets 10 Expressways Expressways are a separate class of highways with superior facilities and design standards and are meant as through routes having very high volume 'of traffic. The expressways are to be provided with divided carriageways, controlled access, grade separations at cross roads and fencing. These highways should permit only fast moving vehicles.
