My Role as a Change Manager
After reading through all the different kinds of change managers listed in table 12.1, I
believe my approach as a change manager would be to find the positive deviants. Simply put, a
positive deviant change manager faces the task of finding employees or teams within an
organization that are already successful given the current circumstances and then bringing those
ideas to light so that the rest of the organization can excel. It’s challenging and time-consuming
to find the right positive deviant, but when the right one is found, it can drastically help change
an organization for the better. I like bringing the best out of people. By using this approach, I
could do just that. Not only does this approach include other employees, thus decreasing the
chances of resistance, but it also allows the change process to feel more natural since the change
idea came from someone who’s not a manager.
Positive Deviant
This is reflected in my behavior because I tend to look for what someone else is doing
better in their life so I can improve mine. Everyone has a different perspective in life since
everyone is made different. When a manager can effectively comb through all the different
perspectives employees within their organization may have, many ideas on dealing with specific
issues will be presented. Managers cannot underestimate employees' knowledge because they are
the ones dealing with customers. Their insight on what to change to help the organization run
better might be accurate. That’s why it’s the manager's job to find the right positive deviant
because there might be more than one that is successful. From what I’ve read, my personality fits
the approach of a positive deviant change manager. In addition, “dropping below the radar”
would negatively affect my chances of being a quality change manager. Managers must be
present and alert to catch positive deviants.
