His father died shortly a fter. With no parents to care for hi m, Young Ed g ar was moved to Richmond, Vi rgi nia to be raised by the Allan family. As a young boy, Ed g ar l oved to spend his days writi ng. He also enjoyed readi ng poetry and swi mmi ng. When he was old enou gh, Ed g ar entered the Uni versity o f Vi rgi nia to study lang ua ges. He dropped ou t a fter one year. In 1827, Ed g ar enlisted i n the U.S. Army. Two years later, he started taki ng classes at the U.S. Military Academy at West Poi nt. Ed g ar o ften ski pped class and earned poor grades. It was not l ong before he was kicked ou t o f school. brookedianekhan With nowhere else to turn, Ed g ar moved i n with his aunt i n Balti more, Maryland. He made the decision to focus on what he l oved most, writi ng. After getti ng a job with a ma g azi ne i n Richmond, Ed g ar settled down and married his cousi n Vi rgi nia Clemm. Over the next several years, Ed g ar wrote many poems and short stories. In 1845 , Ed g ar’s poem ”The Raven” was published i n a New York newspaper. It was an i nstant success. Ed g ar only made a few dollars for the poem, bu t he became known around the world as a talented writer. Two years a fter the success o f “The Raven,” Ed g ar’s wi fe passed away. This tra gic event pl unged Ed g ar i nto a downward spi ral. Ed g ar spent the last years o f his li fe poor, drunk, and sick. In 1849 , he was found deli rious on the streets o f Balti more, Maryland. He died a few days later. Ed g ar Allan Poe remai ns one o f America's most famous writers.
