The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment. Managed by Arts Midwest, this initiative offers grants to support innovative community reading programs designed around a single book or poet. Our program, Big Read Connects Tucson, will focus on the life and work of Edgar Allan Poe. Literacy Connects has been working with many community partners and schools to put together an exciting array of events and activities around town. School programs, scholarly discussions, film screenings, book discussions, theatrical performances, visual art shows, natural history demos, star gazing events, musical performances, and Poe-themed food and drink are just some of the exciting ways you can join in the celebration. The Big Read integrates art and literacy in a way that truly connects you with your community and highlights the joys of reading. We hope that you will be inspired, not only to read the work of Edgar Allan Poe, but to join in the fun around town and share your experiences with us and the rest of the community. Stay tuned for more details leading up to our official launch in September. 200 E Yavapai Rd Tucson, AZ 85705 (520) 882-8006 www.LiteracyConnects.org
