Surveys reveal dramatic shifts in social attitudes toward issues such as same-sex
marriage and citizenship for illegal immigrants.
How do you think these changing attitudes might affect the manager’s job over the next
few years?
In today’s society, there has been an ever-growing shift in socio-cultural values, such as
greater acceptance of same-sex marriage and citizenship for illegal immigrants. These
tie into the more progressive views of inclusivity, compassion, and mutual respect for all
identities. Thus, these shifting values in the external environment have effects on the
expectations for managers within corporations in society; in particular, what it means to
be an ethically responsible manager in contemporary society.
For this managers need to recruit employees without measuring the attributes of
employees on the basis of their sex, marital background, citizenship, native places, and
so on. Managers need to get employees without these social restrictions and need to
get this into consideration so that firms will be able to adapt to the changing patterns of
society. Managers also need to take care of the prevailing culture in the organization
due to this social change.
Assignment 2
Do you think it’s possible for someone to develop a global mindset if they never live
outside their native country?
It is difficult but not impossible for someone to develop a global mindset if they never
lived outside of their native country. In this, there are some elements that are hard to
transmit in a short period of time without real-life experience and they have never left
their native country. For example, weather conditions affect behaviors, political and
religious environments have an impact on generations, and how traditions, that will
probably make no sense from the outsider's point of view, suddenly make sense even
for business.
How might they do that?
Professionals with a global mindset leverage all that they know about their culture and
the cultures of other people to react to situations in the most productive ways, all without
losing sight of who they are. There is a five-step cycle that can help one develop a
global mindset and improve the quality of cross-cultural interaction.
1. Recognize your own cultural values and biases.
You might complete a cultural values assessment to not only get to know
yourself but also see how you compare to other cultures across various
dimensions like communication style and hierarchy
2. Get to know your personality traits, especially curiosity.
There are five specific traits that affect your ability to interact effectively with different
cultures:

Curiosity
Ask yourself how open you are to different ways of managing a team.
3. Learn about the workplace and business expectations of relevant
countries and markets.
It’s important to note that cultural norms are not stereotypes but high-level
tendencies.
4. Build strong intercultural relationships.
The ability to form relationships across cultures is not a given, but the
more positive intercultural relationships you develop, the more comfortable
you’ll have with diverse work styles and the less you’ll resort to
stereotyping.
5. Develop strategies to adjust and flex your style.
This step involves expanding your repertoire of business behaviors by
learning to behave in ways that may be unusual to you but highly effective
when interacting with others.
