KIMAYONG Teacher III Ifugao Technical Vocational High School Bimpal, Lamut, Ifugao March 2020 ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to find out if there is a significant difference in the level of the students’ reading performance before and after the use of authentic materials in teaching reading. The participants of the study were the 37 Grade 10-Garnet students of Ifugao Technical Vocational High School for School Year 2019-2020. Diagnostic and assessment tests were used as data gathering tools of this research. The researcher employed a quantitative approach in dealing with the results of this study. Specifically, Mean Percentage Score (MPS) was used to measure the students’ level of reading competency before and after the use of authentic materials in reading. The Standard Deviation was used to compare the Deviation in the MPS of the students before and after the application of the research. The t-test was employed in order to determine the difference between the level of the students’ reading competency before and after the use of authentic materials in teaching reading. The t-test result showed that there was a significant improvement of the students’ reading comprehension after using authentic materials in reading. This means that a visual aid like authentic materials can help the students comprehend a text. It may not be a perfect score but the gains showed by the results of the pre- and post-test proves that using authentic reading materials can be utilized to improve comprehension.
