East Coast Torrent I woke up early with ants in my pants that day. Since the night before, my cousin had come to spend the night at my house for today’s trip. We were planning to go for an overnight stay at a seaside hotel near the east coast with my uncle’s family. We brushed our teeth, carried all our luggage, which we had packed the night before, and left the house in a hurry. Outside, luckily, we got a taxi in just a few minutes. While we were on the taxi to the hotel, the sky was seemingly clear. However, when we arrived at the hotel, it was already apparent that it would be raining soon. We chose to have our lunch at the restaurant in the hotel. After filling our stomachs, we decided to go to the beach out of excitement, although the first few drops of rain were already falling. Suddenly, the sky became covered by gigantic, black clouds and the stormy wind started to howl. The wind became so strong, my umbrella flew out of my hand and landed far in the sea. As the merciless rain beat down in torrents on, boats were sent flying to shore. Tree branches broke off and hit the ground. People were screaming and shouting. We turned back and ran towards the hotel for shelter. Even in the hotel, the conditions were disheartening. The windowpanes were rattling from the extreme wind and heavy thunder. Many of the windows were being shattered one by one by flying debris, sending sharp fragments everywhere. Injured people were brought into the hotel by the hundreds while they were waiting for medical assistance. In the end, the hotel was crowded with too many people. It seemed as if it would be very noisy until night because of the cleaning effort to remove the wreckages. Worst of all, the lights were out, making moving around even harder, and causing unnecessary injuries. As we did not think that it was a good idea to stay in the hotel anymore, we cancelled our stay there and made up our mind to go home. When the squally weather subsided, we took a long walk in the abating rain from the hotel to the nearest taxi stand. There, we waited for more than an hour just to get a taxi. It was a great relief to get home. Once we reached home, I immediately took a long, hot shower. It was a horrible day. I have learnt that sometimes unexpected things happen in life, and you just must be ready for it, physically, and mentally.
