Design Methodology for Fashion Mrunali Likhar BD/19/159 Design Design is the discipline where arts and science come together to materialise ideas, techniques and experiences that the user enjoys. I say this from the perspective of an aspiring UI/UX designer, who is in constant pursuit of pushing my creative as well as technical skills to deliver the best possible products to the end-user. UX design Product design UI design Design applies both for tangible as well as intangible products and experiences, as it is the discipline which deals with how we perceive our reality. This discipline has the power to influence the way we experience the world around us and directly affects our thoughts, emotions and reactions to the world around us. And one of the most useful skill for a designer is the ability to empathise. Empathy is the foremost skill required in devising a strategy for design. And this skill combined with the creative outlook and technical representation capabilities of a designer, enable the designer to build upon existing things and innovate. A designers job is to use his/her’s knowledge of how things are perceived by the user to achieve the set goals of a product. Design can be termed as an act of communication. Design’s purpose is to communicate with the user in efficient ways. And a good designer understands the depth of this and knows the user in ways, the user himself doesn’t understand. “Good design is obvious, great design is transparent” -Joe Sparano ART Art is a medium of expression for the limitless bounds of human imagination. It is a free space where human thoughts are manifested into physical representations of it. Art in its true definition can been observed and found in infinite different places and forms. Rembrandt's Self-Portrait with Two Circles I'M LOSING YOUR MIND by Robin Amora Mughal Stone Inlay Although we have been fed the idea of it mostly being in form of paintings, sculptures, etc. Art can be found in even the remotest of places and could be man made or a seeming miracle of nature. Looking around, one realises to appreciate art by the simple process of observance. Art does not have a language, but rather an expected sense of emotion triggered. This emotion may not be fixed, and so we realise this very perplexing nature of art that it’s not experienced in the same way by everyone. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions, and artists are the people who embellish this flow of emotions onto inanimate objects to be immortalised. Art observed in nature “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” -Thomas Merton Fashion Fashion is a word used to describe a trend or a popular choice, we assume it to be about clothes and accessories. Infact fashion can be used to describe anything that a particular group person finds tasteful. Historically, fashion has always been a slow changing in the context of clothes. As people used to prefer functionality over form, with visual form being given the lowest of priorities. But as the standard of living got better, the undying thirst of humans to find beauty in form came to be increasingly represented widely by the cloths that they wear. Clothes have become a statement that represents a lot about the person who is sporting it. It has changed time and again throughout the millennia. And has always been made possible due to the advances in the techniques used to make the articles. The techniques that made these articles worn by people widespread were responsible for making it a trend. And with the advent of mass manufacturing and affordability, fashion has become an intergral part of an individual's life. “Fashion always comes back to you, but in a different form” Me Craft Craft, could be better understood as being a set of skill an artist or designer possesses to represent his/her’s thought in a tangible object. Crafts has always been an essential part of human society and has had impact on our society in ways we wouldn’t be able to fathom in an entire human lifetime. Craft includes a very wide range of set of practices that one must master to be able to use them to their full potential. Crafts are a bizarre subset of art, where there is some kind of defined structure and rules are to be followed to freely express emotion that the artist intends. Such is the dichotomy of arts. Crafts have been a centerpiece of history and have been a representation of people, displaying their identity to the world. It’s almost developed along the same lines as science, evolving into a tradition. Historically, crafts have been a source of livelihood for the people practicing them.People practicing these arts have learned and evolved their techniques over many years, resulting in them knowing very specific details, that was thought to be only gathered from through scientific analysis. For example metal workers since millenia have known about intricacies surrounding the specifics of various metals. “Craft can get you through ninety percent of a piece, but it's art that carries you at the end.” -Stephen Graham Jones
