Honors College Event Reflection I attended the Coach J Cater Porch Talk where discussed her career, her goals, and other aspect of her life. I found some relation in the way she spoke about how she ended up being a basketball coach. Originally Coach J was a business/accountant major and wanted to work with numbers. To pay for grad school she volunteered for the women’s basketball team, and the rest is history. I can find some relation in her words as I am majoring in mechanical engineering but do not know where I want to end up. Her words inspired me to not loose hope and to focus on my education and the rest will come later. It may not be specifically engineering but something will come. Coach J was asked the question “What has been the toughest part of coaching”. She responded saying that making her players understand that talent is not enough to win games, but you must put forward the effort to learn and practice. Coming into college I have had to adapt as in high school I never studied and just relied on my own intellect. At Auburn I have had to really work on my studies and put forward the effort to make sure I understand my studies. Freshman year has showed me that my talent and natural intellect will not carry me as it did in high school. In order to succeed as an academic intellect, I must work towards my goals and take responsibility for my grades through the rest of college and even professional career.
