Nowadays, an increasing number of people are concerned about the choice of major for
university students. However weather universities should choose major by themselves is
a controversial issue. Some people think that students should listen to their parents; others
believe that students should be allowed to apply for the major they prefer. In my opinion
students should choose major by themselves.
Firstly, it is clear that Interest is the best teacher, choose a major that interests them can
make their learning process smoother. This is because studying at university is much
harder than in high school. It is not enough for only work hard, there are many things you
need to learn on your own. This is where the importance of interest comes into play, interest
can make this process easier.
Moreover, students know new things more and faster than parents. Maybe they can find
some major which will have a good future, but because it is some new field, their parents
have not heard of. If students listen to their parents' choices at this time, they may miss
out on some of the better opportunities.
This is not say that universities should not pay any attention to parents advices. Parents
have more social experience and they are more aware of which major will lead to a good
job in the future. But still, parents should only give advice, not make choices for their
child.
In summary, students should choose major by themselves, as this will be more beneficial
to their studies at university. Meanwhile, we should not ignore advices from parents. By
doing so universities may can have a better future.
