Case Analysis
Introduction
As we go through long term progress in communication technology, all kinds of
derivatives come out as different forms of social media. This analysis aims to
research social and technology interaction particularly in the cultural impacts of
social media on teenagers or adolescents. I want to see the results through
researching about the recent analysis on social media impacts and how the
social media influence culture background. As we all know, the students are
easy to influence and not yet shaped. What the students see on social media
platforms can make great impacts on their self-interpretation and what they
think of the world. Lines, whats-app, Instagram, these mainstream platforms all
consist of the function of chatting with other people and sharing life photos. TV
channels also show all kinds of news, educational information or shows. This
information shapes the cultural background of the whole society. I wonder how
social media influences society, especially teenagers culturally.
Identify the issue
The issue we want to address is how nowadays social media is influencing
young people in culture aspect. The first definition we need to identify is culture.
Kroeber and Kluckhohn identified over 160 definitions of culture making
“culture” one of the most complex, elusive terms in the English language. Sixty
years later, there is still no agreement on a definition of culture. Researchers
said culture is“a coherent and enduring set of values that members of the
nation-state carry and invariably act upon”and also culture “is learned and
passed on to new members of the group through social interaction; culture is
dynamic—it changes over time”. The new culture formed among teenagers
online regarding sexism, speaking bad language becomes popular and seems
to be usual for young people. This analysis aims to clarify the relationship
between social media and online culture formation. I will try to think of ways to
prevent the deterioration of cultural background on social media from the
perspective of teenagers.
Working Framework
The research was done for stakeholders as teenagers. The circumstances are
under modern technology, considering the cultural background and most
teenagers are under education. When I start to research about culture and the
social media interaction, I found that most results I found are negative
regarding the impacts of social media on cultural aspect. In “Social Media :
Culture and Identity”, the authors describes how female sexual stereotype was
formed in social media in detail. “THOT” or “That Hoe Over There” becomes a
commonly used expression for popular rappers. “THOT” is not a good phrase
for calling a woman. However, most followers or fans of those rappers are
`
teenagers. This cultural negative impact mostly impresses in the minds of
young people. Aside from sexism and racism, Cyberbullying also appears in
my process of research. The combination of the Internet and mobile technology
has truly changed the way people interact with each other. Cyberbullying has
emerged as a big concern in the past decade. There are too many cases
cyberbullying. A recent event happens on an 11-year-old child, resulted in a
broken wrist and hospitalization. Cyberbullying leads to uncountable damages
including teenager suicides.
Decision Made
According to the law in British Columbia, there’s “Hate propaganda on the
Internet”. This line talks about how people who give hate speech will be
punished. However, regarding the online behaviors and social media, no
existing law has strictly certified what could be allowed to do and what
movements or languages will be against the law. People who spread racism or
who promote heresy still actively appear in public sights. There are still more
actions to be taken to protect teenagers from harmful or unhealthy information
appearing in social media.
Addressing the issue
In relation to my group’s final report, this analysis focuses on the cultural
influence of social media while the final report remains the impact on
adolescents of social media. The final report will focus on how social media
influences teenagers from different aspects. This case analysis provides actual
examples for proof in final report illustration. For the deteriorated cultural
environment in social media, the best solution is to publish better and
well-rounded laws to limit and organize hate speech and harmful information
spread. On the other hand, further education and movements should be taken
through mainstream social media like Facebook and Instagram. People should
be taught to stop sharing racism and harmful ideas. If social media could be
utilized in better ways, the issue can be solved.
