Introduction to Perspective
Creating the Illusion of Space
What is perspective?
• In art, perspective is a technique used to create an illusion
of a three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional
surface.
• There are two types of perspective, linear and non-linear.
Non-linear Perspective
• Non-linear perspective shows depth through overlapping, size
variation, color, and value.

Linear
Perspective
• Linear perspective: Using
lines to create an illusion
of depth.
• One point perspective:
When all lines meet at one
point.
• Two point perspective:
When lines appear to meet
at two different points.
• Multiple point perspective:
When lines go to more
than two points.
One Point
Perspective
• Only one vanishing point is on the
horizon line.
• A vanishing point is the point in
which receding parallel lines
appear to converge.
• The horizon line is the line that
delineates where the sky meets
the ground. Is used as a guide for
where the viewer’s eye level falls.
Two Point
Perspective
• When two vanishing points exist
on the horizon line.
• Two-point perspective is useful in
creating corners and multiple
street views in a cityscape.
Multiple Point
Perspective
Many vanishing points can be
used to create complicated
perspective images.
