Tntroductiun The standard service of a T cc 4 Vaporizer shall consist of the following: IJisassembly of components as required. Thorough cleaning. Inspection for damage and wear. Rene,.-al of Wicks, Seals and damaged or worn components as required. LubricatiolL Tactile TesL~. Chee.ks of the delivered concentration under cfosely defined conditions and re-calibration as necessary. Unless otherwise staled, the procedures which follow arc appl icahle Lo all Tee 4 vaporizers. Note. Draining can be assisted by carefully tilting the vapori;-.er slightly forwards. 2.1.1.2 D rying-Out a) Mount the vaporizer on Lhc lest stand and turn the dial 10 its maximum setting. b) Pass a fltlw of 5 litres/minute air or oxygen through the vaporizer for al least one hour until the wicks have dried out. Exhaust to suitable a gas scavenging sysL£m. Alternatively: a) Block the outlet of the vaporizer. turn the dial to its maicim um setting and connect the vaporizer drnin to a vacuum system (between IO and 30 litres/minute negative flow) for one hour until the vaporizer is dry. 2.1.2 Method 2 Agent Recovery c:onden!ICIJ 2.1.1.1 Drainine a) Connect the vaporizer to the vacuum ~-yslem by inserting drug specific adaptor in Lo the drain port of the keyed filler assembly and clamping ii in position with the clam p screw. b) Open the drain screw and set the dial to its maximum mark. e) To ensure that all liquid is drained from the vaporizer, till the vaporizer forward slightly until liquid can no loTT!,>er he seen flowi ng into the glass llask. 2.1.2 prying Ont a) Ensure that the Condenser is switched · Off'. b) Open the druin valve, and drain oil all ageot into the appropnately labelled measuring cylinder. Rec;ord the quantity of anaesthetic agent recovered on the Condenser Record Form AEQF-10.6. 1/1. c) Transfer the agent into the appropriatel y labelled brown W inchester bottle for future purity check.(Rd~ lo TEST FQlJJPMl.::N r MANlJAL Section 1 I). Store the Winchester bottle in the de~ignatcd quarantine area of the <.ln,.1g cupboard. CONDENSER ONT,Y Close the valve on the outlet 10 the Condenser and open the drain valve. Turn on the drying-out pump at the time-switch to force any remaining water out of the system. Turn off the dl)'ing-out pump, close the drain valve, and open the outlet valve. NOTE: In order to speed up the Condenser thawing-out process, the heater switch may be set in the red-light position. fSOFLURANF. CONDENSER ONLY Close the valve on the outlel lo lhe condenser and open lhe drain valve. Detach the pipe T connection on the Condenser inlet, and blow through the Condenser using an air-line gun to force out any remaining water lrom the system_ <}pen the outlet valve and re-fit the T piece. d) Switch on the Condenser by turning the switch to the cooling position, ( the green lamp will be ill uminatcd)and allow a period or 4S minutes tn elapse in order to permit the correct open1ting temperature to be achieved. c) lJuring d.rJing-out monitor the Condenser pressure gauge. An increase in pressure indicate.~ that ice is causing a restriction to the ga~ llow, and that action must he taken lo restore the Condenser's optimum operating condition. f) lfthe specified pressure is exceeded, inform the Service/Te~t Supervisor, who will take the rcqui red action. g) Record the quantity of dried-out vaporizers on i\EQl'• I0.6. Iii THEN:h) Blank off the inlet port with a plastic plug. i) Connect the vaporizer to the evacuation system j) Turn the dial to the maximum calibration mark and allow the vaporizers to dry out as follows: Tialothane Ent1uranc / lsofluranc 2.2 40 minutes Max. 30 minutes Max MAXTEST Sec Section 3 Tee 4 Vapori:r.er Service Manual Section I CONTROLLED DOCUMENT 7 Page4of 18 Rcvision7 A E SERVICES 2.3 INSPEC'llON/CIJF.CK With the exception of the Serial Number Label, located on the rear lace oflhc lnl.Crlock Block, and the vaporizer type label, on the front face of the foterlock Block, carefully i-emove all other .~elr adhesive labels and adhesive residue from the vaporizer u<;ing a cloth moistened with f.lecsol fD or similar cleauing agent. Visually examine the vaporizer for signs of external damage. Where necessary. renew damaged or worn parts during the service. Ensure that the Locking Lever operates positively and that the vaporizer Jocks satisfactorily onto the Sele1.-"!atllC manifold. 2.4 DIAL ASSEMBLY (figure 1, Page 8) a) Remove the self adhesive Dial Cover Label from the Dial. b) l ,ou~n the thn.-c cheese-head screws ( M3) which secure the Dial and remove the dial Assembly. c) Ins peel the Clicker Plungers and Springs and also the locking catch mechanism. Renew any parts which arc damaged or worn. 2.5 S'IUP CONTROL (figure 2, Page 8) a) Ch..-ck the nylon Stop Control for damage and wear and if necessary replace. NOTE: If the stop control has to be replaced, the position of the edge of the stop at the maximum dial setting may have to he a adjusted by culling or filing the stop sn that the dial can reach the maximwn graduation on the dial. 2.6 REMOVING/REPLA(:ING A ROIARY (Hgure 3, Page 9 and Figures 4 & S, Page 10) a) Remove the Locking Lever screw (M3), the Locking Lever and the Spindle Bush. Peel-off the self adhesive Label from the Interlock .Block to expose the heads of the hexagon socket head screws (M4). Rcmo"e the two Po:li head screws and Top Cover Plate. Un~Tew completely the two Pozi head screws and lift out the Pivot AnniPlatform Assembly. It may be necessary to lever out these assemblies but care must be taken not to damage the black anodizing or the Interlock Block. Carefully remove the Woodruff Key and put to one side for later use. Note. There are two designs of Rotary Valve in use. The earlier one uses a separnte WoudruffKey and the later one ha~ an integral key. Unscrew and remove the three M.3 clamp screws and Clamp Tabs. Unscrew the four M5 and the two M4 screws that secure the Interlock lllock. Lift off the Interlock Block, leaving the Rotary Valve, Washer.; alld Compression Spring in place. Remove the Pivot Cam and Retaining Ring from the Rlock, lining over the Spirol Pin~. Remove and discard the black rubber Distributor Seal from the bore of the Interlock Ulock. Note. Ir it is necessary 10 tit a new Serial Plate, the Interlock Block should be drilled at this point. Tee 4 Vaporizer Service Manual Section I 1 ... ---- coNrRoli:milocui.irn--··1 ... ~~-~ Page 5 or IS Revision 7 AESERVICES b) Carefully lift the Rotary Valve off the Sump Cover and remove and place to one side the Thrust Washcr(Thick), Spring and Thrust Washer(Thin). NOTE: The Rotary Valve and Sump Cover are very irnponant precision components and great eai-e must be taken not to damage them when they arc being worked on or handled. c) Inspect and clean the Rota,y Valve and Sump Cover checking for damage. Clean the Rotary Valve by wiping with a soft cloth moistened with Elecsol FIJ, taking particular care not to damage the lower lace, then polish with a clean, dry cloth. NOTE. The Rotary Valve must not be soaked in Ulccsol FIJ. Any marks or dirt on the surface of the Valve, which an,~ not easily removed by wiping, should be i-emoved by gently rubbing with 'Duraglit' Silver Polish Wadding and then wiped with a soft cloth moistened with Elecsol m. Finally, ii should be polished with a clean, dry cloth. Materials of a moi-e abrasive nature must not be used. d) Thoroughly clean the Sump Cover with a soil cloth moistened with Elccsol FD taking care not to scratch or damage the main sea ling face. Then polish with a clean diy cloth. e) Before fining the Rotaiy Valve, write the Valve Presswe Reading, if available, on the Scrv ice Record. I) Very carefully place the Rotary Valve on the Sump Cover with the key or keyw.iy positiont¾I to the right when viewed l"rom the front of lhe vaporizer. g) lllspect the thinner Thrust Washer and also the thicker Thrust Washer and replace as necessary i.e. if damaged or wom h) Place the thinner Thrust Washer over the stem of the Valve, followed by the Spring and then the thicker Thrust Washer. i) Take a new Distributor 'U' Seal, lubricate with 'Fomblin' IJTI 8 grease, fit to the special lilting sleeve and place the sleeve over the valve ~'tern. j) Check that the PTFE 0-Ring is fitted to the Interlock lllock then position the Block over the fitting sleeve with the pointer 10 the front. k) Carefully press downw.irds on the Interlock Block and hold ii in place whilst fining and folly lightening the six ( Four MS and two M4) retaining screws. Page 6 of 18 Revision 7 A E SERVICES I) .Ensure that there is sufficient Fomblin UT 18 grease on the SI ip Ring and replace. Grease the Pivot Cam as required wi lh Fomblin Url 8 grease and then fit over the Rotary Valve spindle into the Interlock Ulock. Ensure that the retaining Ring is adequately lubricated with Fomblin UT 18 grease and fit into the Interlock Block. Secure the Retaining Ring with the three M3 screws and Clamp Tabs, carefully and evenly tightening down in position. Lin-up keyways in Cam and Rotary Valve then fit the Woodruff Key. m) F.nsure that there is sufficient Fomblin UT18 grease on the Pl al form and Pi vol Arm assemblies and r~fit the Interlock assembly. Secure the assemblies with two M4 screws, tightening down in position hul ensuring that there is minimum clearance between the Pivot Rearini,rs and Pivot Ann. nJ Check that Spring is in position then re-Iii Stop Rel~ Hutton. Check that Clicker Plungers and Springs are in position and re-fit the Dial Assembly, securing with three M3 screws. oJ Install the Top Cover Plate, securing with two M4 screws. Install the Lock/Unlock Knob Bu.<,h on the J,ocking Lever Spindle. lm,1all the Lock/Unlock Knob and secure with one M3 screw. The vapori7.er shal I have been dr.1i11ed, dried-out and Max. tested prior to the commencement of this operation. a) Remove the self-adhesive Keyed Filler label and unscrew the two M3 screws which retain the liller. ff a keyed filler is fitted, can: must be taken to ensure that the Filler BaJI is not misplaced Remove the Filler Assembly and place to one side. h) Invert the vaporizer. Remove the lour M5 Pozi screws and remove the Outer Cover Rase and Heat Pad then lift off the Outer Cover. Place all components to one side for subsequent use. c) Cut and remove the Tesa tape to release the Support Plate. Discard the old Tesa Tape. d) l lnscrew and remove the li.1ur Sump Studs and Washers. Lift off the Sump Assembly with 0-Ring. Lift off the Outer Wick Assembly. Renew the Outer Wick, ,;ecuring with cotton twine. 2.8 SF.Ml' AND WICKS (1'"igure 6, .Page 13 and J<igure 7, Page 14) 2.3.1 Disassembly a) Remove the self-adhesive label from the Filler. b) Unscrew the two M4 x 35 Socket Cap Screws which secure the Filler Body Assembly to the Sump, remove the Filler Body and the twu PTFE seals. Note On the Keyed Filler, a 4 mm Nylon Ball is located between the Filler Body and the Sump. When removing the Filler Body, take care not to Jose the Ball. c) Slacken lhe three M4 x 6 l lexagon Socket Set Screws which are used to Iift the Heat Pad up to the Sump Base. d) Unscrew and remove the four MS x 16 Po:li Pan Head Screws in the Outlet Cover Base and remove the Rase and the Heat Pad. e J Slide off the Outer Cover. I) Remove the Sl!jlpOrt Plate (if fitted) which is secured to th.e Sump Studs by adhesive tape. Check that the two Sump Stud.~ at the rear or the unit are or the 'waisted' type. If nol, dispose of them and fit the latest type during re-assembly g) Remove and dispose ol'the Wicks. i) The Outer Wick is attached with thread to the Spiral Support The Inner Wick is attached with thread to the lnncr Wick Support Assembly. ii) Unscrew the two M3 x 5 Pozidrivc Screws and remove the Non-Spill Cup. Clean the external surfaces with Elecsol FD or similar cleaning agent. i) Note: This next procedure only needs lo be carried out i r Lhe vaporizer has not been sen, iced in the past three years. i) Inspect the Thermostat for signs of corrosion and damage. ii) Clean the Thermostat by blowing through with clean compressed air at 210 kPa (30 psi) maximum. iii) Check the Thennostat restriction as detailed in Section XX. iv) Fit a new ()-Ring to the Sump Cover face. v) Relit the Thermostat and secure with two MS x 16 Screws and spring Washers. Fnsure that the screws are runy tightened j) Fit three new O-Rings lo the Inner Wick Support Assembly, then refit the Assembly. 2.8.2 Assembly a) Fit the Jnner Wick onto the Jnner Wick Support Assembly, ensuring that the cut- out holes are aligned with the holes in the rivets. Secure with cotton thread. b) Lay the Non-Spill Cup Wick. across the Cup mid secure with cotton thread. Fit the Non-Spill Cup into the Baille and secure with two M3 x 5 Pozi-Drivc Screws. L:) Fit the Outer Wick onto the Wick Support and secure with cotton thread. d) Fil the Outer Wick Support over the Inner wick Assembly. Nole: This may he made easier by first wrapping a thin film of plastic, for example Mylar, around the Tnner Wick Assembly to form a sleeve, then sliding the the Spiral Wick Assembly over the sleeve onto the Suppon and then withdra\l,ing the sltieve. A paper sleeve may be used instead of plastic but care must he taken to ensure that the paper does not tear when the paper is withdrawn leaving paper sandwiched between the Wick and the Spiral. 2.8.J Sumu <:leaning. Clean the inside of the Sump using Llecsol FD or a similar a cleaning agent . 2.8.4 Hnal Fil a Locking washer to each Hexagon Stud as illustrated (sec Hgurc XX). Fit a new O-Ring to the Sump Assembly. This procedure needs only lo be perfonned if the thermostat is found to he in need of adjustment during calibration. a) Unscrew the four M4 slolled head screws which secure the Inner Wick Assembly and Iifl off the assembly together with the three 0-Rings. Place to one side for subsequent use. b) Obtain a replacement Thermostat of the correct type and record the number or 1hc new thennostat on the te~1 sheet. Staple the thermostat tesl recoTd to the vaporizer test sheet. Secure the thcrmostal to the Sump Cover usiug the two M5 Pozi screws and wa~hcrs. c) Secure the Inncr Wick As:,em bly to the Sump Cover using the lour M4 slotted head screws, ensuring that the lhrcc 0-Ring.~ are in place and that the Wick is correctly orientated. d} Invert the vaporizer. Wrap greaseproof paper round the Inner Wick Assembly and slide the Spiral Wick Support into posilinn over the Inner Wick, ensuring that the paper has nol hcwme tom and that the Inner Wick is not crumpled into lhe spiral. Note that the leg of the Spiral is positioned at the bottom of the Sump e) Fit the Sump Assembly over the Wick AsSt"mbly ensuring that the Sump ()-Ring is in place. Secure lhe Sump to the Sump Cover with the four Sump Sluds. f) Secure the Support Plate in position on the Swnp .Studs wilh Tesa Tape adhering to the sides of the Sump g) Fit the Ouler Cover over the Sump Studs. Position the Heat Pad on lhe base of the Sump Assembly. Fit the Outer Cover Rase into position on the Outer Cover and secure to the Sump Studs with the four M5 Pozi Pan Head screws. Secure the Heat Pad to the Sump with the three M4 G11.lb screws in the Outer Cover Base. , ..., ....... . ..... I Keyed Filler Assembly (Figure 8, Page 17 ) a) Inspect the Level Tube. If il is an ~.irlier type, which incorporates a single black band, remove it and tit the later type which has two black band<. and tv.-u triangles. b) When filling the new Level Tube, fit two new Seals and ensure that the black marked hand,; and lriangles are towards the front face of lhe filler and that both are in the botlom half of the opening in the .Block. c) Fil a new 0-Ring to the Level Tube Plug. It is ne1.-essary to stretch the O-Ring over the thread and then to compress it into the groove. d) Unscrew and remove the three M2.5 x 6 Screws which secure the Spool Valve Cam. This operation is easier if the Knob is turned fully counter-clock wi~e lo open the Valve. e) Remove lhe Spool Valve from the Filler Body. Fil three ne\v seals on the Spool Valve using a 2 mm tommy-bar to unscrew the Piston End. f) Remove and dispose orlhe Filler Valve Seal, as illustrated. Apply a jet or clean, di:y, compressed air to lhe porlS at the rear of the Filler Body to remove any foreign matter. gi Fit a new Valve Seal as illustrated and then carefully refil the Spool Valve into the Filler Body. 2. I0.2 Screw Cap Filler Assembly (l'igure 9, Page 17 ) a) Inspect the Level Tube. If ii is an earlier type, which incorporates a single black band, remove it and fit the lalcr lype which has two black bands and lwo triangles. b) When fitting the new I .evel Tube, fit two new Seals and ensure that the black marked bands and lriangles are towards the front face of the filler and that both arc in the bottom hal r or the opening in the Ulock. c) Fit a new O-.Ring to the Level Tube Plug. II is necessuy to stretch the O-Ring over the thread and then to compress it inlo the groove. d) Unscrew and remove the Filler Plug and the Drain Valve Spindle Assembly. e) Apply a jct of clean, dry, compressed air to the ports at the rear ofthe Filler Body to remove any foreign matter. I) Fit a new Seill Ring to the Filler Plug and lit the Filler Plug into the Filler Body. Tel~ 4 Vaporizer Service Manual Stttion 2 ' Pi1gc J of3 Revi~ion 2 AESERVfCES SECTION2 MK.4 VAPORIZER LEAK TEST VAPORIZER SHOULD CONTAIN NO UQUJD AGENT FOR LEAK TEST AT 'ON' I) Connect Vaporizt.T into Leak Test circuit (Figure I). 2) Turn the vaporizer on and set the dial to 3% 3) Open the line adjustment valve to pressurize the circuit to 200 to 220 mm Hg and allow the pressure reading to sLabilize. Note the pressure reading. 4) Start the timer and after 30 seconds check the pressure drop. Clean off residual shellac from thermostat ac!justing and minim um stop .~crews. NOTF.: It is not necessary to remove all traces of shellac, just loose particles that may detach as thennostat screws/nuts are adju~-ted. 2 Open flapper with fingers, hold up to light source, and examine area between tlappcr and thermostat body for dirt or dust particles. Whilst still holding Happer open, blow clean air, using air-I inc gun, through thermostat via inlet hole. RE-EXAMINE. 3 Segregate thermo.stat types i.e. 'F.' Enll uratec and 'F' Fluoteci1sotec Using g-duges TOI and 102, check the effective length as appropriate (TOI) F-~24.5 mm. and (T02) E~ 28.3mm. 4 Nole that this step is only performed if the thennostat spri11g hinge is suspected of being deformed, as indicated by instability on setting or very low resistance. Remove the two Po.zi HD screws securing the leaf spring and one clamp plate. Detach the spring hinge from the flapper by removing the two cJsk Pozi HD screws. Fit new hinge to napper and secure, ensuring hinge: is square to flapper. Position flapper assembly. onto thermostat body and fit clamp plate and lear spring, secure loosely using two Pozi pan HD screws. Set hinge gap using tool (T03) and secure flapper and Jcar spring assembly square lo the thennostat body by folly tightening the two Pozi pan HD screws. ,.... Poli5hing: Using a wad of clean paper inserted between the adjusting screw and Bi-metal strip, polish the adjusting screw end by rubbing lhe paper wad vigorously backwards and forwards (approx. 15 times.) (Re-new paper wad frequently a:; it becomes dirty or worn). Racking: Install thcrmostaL~ (of same ly~) onto rc1cks ensuring "O' rings arc correctly in place (in the test racks). Place racks aside for 24 hours to allow temperature to stabilize. Protect from dirt particles ·with polythene sheets.
