a) less
b) more
c) equal
d) less or equal
e) none of the above.
2. A skater is sliding at 8 m/s straight toward the referee. How far from the referee should the
skater start slowing down at 0.75 m/s 2 if he were to stop before he reaches him?
a) 40 m
b) 42 m
c) 42.6 m
d) 43 m
e) 35 m
3. A child is at the lowest point on a moving swing. Which way does his acceleration point?

Short Answer
A (20 marks)
1. Draw detailed position vs. time and velocity vs. time graphs illustrating the motion of a car,
moving at 72 km/h that has to stop within 3.5 seconds, knowing that the reaction time of the
driver is 0.5 seconds. Show coordinates of points of interest as well as all intercepts.
2. A point on the edge of a CD revolving 180 times each minute has an acceleration of 2 m/s 2.
What is the radius of this CD? What would be the acceleration of a point half way to the centre
along the same radius?
3. A snow ball is launched horizontally from a hill 20 m above the ground level at 15m/s. Find
the time it takes to fall and the speed at which it hits the ground.
4. Find the overall displacement of the snow ball in the previous question, as well as its
average velocity.
Problem
T (20 marks)
Phyona (the physicista ) needs to study projectile motion. She goes to a golf course where
the tee is positioned on the top of a 15 m high hill. She shoots the ball at 10m/s and 42 0 above
the horizon.
a) After how many seconds will the ball land on the green at the foot of the hill?
b) If the hole is at the foot of the hill, at 25 m horizontal distance from the tee, by how
much does the ball fall short of hitting the target?
c) If she lowered her angle by 100 would she be better off? By how much?
d) What is Howard’s last name? …not for marks…just for fun…
