Action Items: - Bring takeaways from my five assigned sections of the syllabus Settler Colonialism: “Unsettling the Border” by Sherally Munshi Takeaways: The United States has operated under settler colonialism since its inception. It has consciously expanded into indigenous peoples’ territories and settled, displacing many indigenous people. The idea that the United States functions as a settler colonial society is essential to a modern view of immigration because it brings into question the right of the U.S. to debase and subordinate prospecting immigrants. How can the United States treat immigrants so poorly when most U.S. citizens are they themselves outsiders on indigenous land? Immigration lawmakers often back themselves into the narrow view of “there is a border here. Here is who is allowed to cross it given these reasons.” While it is easy to see immigration as just crossing a border, it doesn’t provide a whole or just understanding of immigration. It is of utmost importance in immigration law that the history of the border is understood as well as its location. At the crossing point between Immigration and Settler Colonialism you can find the truth that our borders are not justifiably settled, or truly settled at all.
