Usage of fur had been reported from the period of Ramayana and Mahabharatha [5].
It is attributed that the ancient Indians used fur only for survival needs like thermal
protection. The cultural change and the attitude of distancing from the essence of the
culture made the people in power to use the fur as a commodity of wealth. This
change in attitude led to hunting of animals for fur, which lead to the establishment
of fur fashion industry. This has now completely viewed in an economic
perspectives.

In the scenario of 34 tigers poached in 2018 [8], it is really alarming that if these
are used for the fashion industry. More than the economic impact it has created
in the unfavourable manner, the intactness of the diversity in the ecosystem is
disrupted in an irreversible manner. As tiger being the apex predator in any
forest ecosystem, the reduction in the number of tigers in an ecosystem will
increase the prey. The prey of tigers being the herbivores, increase in herbivores
such as deer will have a negative impact on the vegetation.
Impact on the vegetation (20 %) due to increase in the population of
herbivores will lead to the habitat fragmentation and ultimately to the climate
change [8].

Solution statement:
Step by step, India is getting closer to honoring the principles of ahimsa –
nonviolence to all beings – and reinvigorating the tenet of mercy to all beings that is
so central to many eastern religions such as Hinduism, Sikhism, Jainism, and
Buddhism. With more than a billion people in the nation – one-seventh of the
world’s population – these gains are magnified in an extraordinary way. [5]
