Identify five (5) points highlighted by President Corazon Aquino in her speech before U.S. Congress on September on September 18, 1986. Explain their significance. In her speech, she had mentioned a “president-turned dictator” which she was pertaining to Ferdinand Marcos Jr. As parted themselves as to anti-Marcos, she talked about Marcos being a dictator. She pointed out that hundreds of Filipinos were imprisoned and Marcos violated their democracy. She shared her experience returning to the Philippines to bury her late husband, former senator Benigno Aquino Jr., who was killed at the Manila International Airport in an attempt to seek for sympathy from her listeners. She was attempting to portray herself as an outraged widow in order to win over her American listeners. When asked if she was seeking help from the US, she mentioned the enormous foreign debt and said she was pleading with foreign creditors. She claimed that corrupt officials and crooks received loans from overseas creditors but offered no evidence to support her claims. As for her, the US invested a lot of money in attempting to protect democracy, but the Philippines is a recovering democracy emerging from the misery of dictatorship. She was hinting that the US should aid the Philippines in its efforts to reestablish democracy. She had highlighted the arising of poverty in the country which she was said that the democracy is all what the Filipino want to achieve.
