President Corazon C. Aquino’s Speech before the US Congress
After reading Corazon Aquino's speech before the joint session of US Congress, these
are the three main points I have observed:
1. The struggles her husband Benigno Simeon Aquino Jr. experiences and how it affected
she was and their family.
She had mentioned how she lost her husband three times in their family's life. First
is when her husband was detained along with some senators, publishers, and people
who had spoken for democracy for 43 days. They locked him up in a tiny, nearly airless
cell in a military camp in the north, stripped him naked and threatened him with execution.
The second time is when he fasted after he was put on trial for subversion, murder, and
a host of other crimes. He said that if he survived it, he was intended to do other things.
By the 40th day, he called off the fast. The third time as mentioned was the most painful
one according to Corazon Aquino. She lost him for good when her husband died. After
all that has happened, she became the key in attaining democracy for the country and its
people after Marcos' regime.
2. The happenings during the presidential elections on 1986.
She took the responsibilities in taking care and fighting for the sake of freedom of
the whole country. She was reported to have lost the elections which made her supporters
challenge the results which resulted to the EDSA People Power Revolution that made
Marcos step down from his reign and ended his 20-year rule. With that being said,
Corazon Aquino became the official President on February 25, 1986 until June 30, 1992.
She became the 11th president of the country and also the first woman to hold that
position.
3. The appeal for help or for financial assistance after being in debt of $26 billion to restore
full constitutional government and for recovering the economy of the country.
The situation of the country after being left with all the things after the Marcos
administration made her sought for help to address the $26 billion dollars of foreign debt.
For over a decade, the country was left to an oppressed situation. Moreover, she also
called for help in preserving the freedom that the Filipinos have always asked for. She
even narrated what happened when she was campaigning that instead of people asking
her for food which clearly they need, they were crying for democracy that they also won
at the end.
