What Do Good Readers Do? By Sikandar Seemab Objectives • Students will become familiar with the characteristics exhibited by good readers. Reading Survey # 1. GOOD READERS Set a purpose for reading. Good readers set a purpose for reading. • Why are you reading this text? • Are you reading for enjoyment to retell to answer questions to gain information Once you have a purpose you can decide on a method of reading to use. carefully reading and rereading: reading to confirm meanings and understandings and to clarify details skimming: reading to gain an overall understanding of the content of the text scanning: reading to locate specific information GOOD READERS rp_o_se for Set a _p_u_ reading. #2. GOOD READERS... Use prior knowledge to make connections. There are 3 Types of Connecitons •Text to Self •Text to Text •Text to the World Prior Knowledge Text to Self Connections (TS) – “This story reminds me of me, my family, my friends, the time.” Prior Knowledge Text to Text Connections (TT) – “This story reminds me of the book, the story, the TV show.” Prior Knowledge Text to the World Connections (TW) – “This story reminds me an event that is going on in the world now or has happened in the past. GOOD READERS... Use _p_r_io_r _kno_wled_g_e_to make connections. #3. GOOD READERS... Ask questions as they read. GOOD READERS... Ask _q_u_e_s_tio_n_s before, during, & after they read. Good readers ask questions. • These questions could be wondering questions or clarifying questions, used to clear up something that doesn’t make sense. • I wonder why…? • What if….? • Why did…? • Questioning helps a reader focus in on what's important in the text. #4. GOOD READERS... Focus on the most important ideas. GOOD READERS... Focus on the most _imp_o_rt_a_n_t_ ideas. #5. GOOD READERS... Visualize and make auditory and other sensory connections. As you read, you should be painting mental pictures in your head. GOOD READERS... V__isua_l_iz_e_and make auditory and other _s_ens_o_r_y_ connections. #6. GOOD READERS... Make inferences, including predictions and conclusions. Who is speaking? "Give me all your treasure, or I'll make you walk the plank! You can't fool me. Even without your crown, I know that you are the king's son. Shiver me timbers, we'll hold you for ransom!" Who has been captured? "Give me all your treasure, or I'll make you walk the plank! Make _infe_r_e_n_ces, including predictions and conclusions. #7. GOOD READERS... Use strategies to “fix” it when they don't comprehend at first. FIX-UP Strategies –Skip ahead. –Reread. –Use the context clues. –Use the syntax (i.e. sentence structure). –Sound it out. GOOD READERS... Use strategies to “_f_ix” it when they don't comprehend at first. #8. GOOD READERS... Know when they have “Zoned Out” during a text reading. GOOD READERS... Know when they have “ zon_e_d o_u_t ” during a text reading. #9. GOOD READERS… Study vocabulary and define unfamiliar words they encounter. GOOD READERS… Study _voca_b_u_lary_ and define u_n_f_a_m_iliar_ words they encounter. # 10. GOOD READERS... Retell and/or summarize what they've read. GOOD READERS... _Rete_ll and/or _ su _mm _a _r_izewhat they've read. • Throughout the year, your teacher will focus on each skill more thoroughly. • Each of you will get to practice these skills so that they become a natural part of what you do when reading.
