Chemical Engineering Department Integrated Design Project CEB4013 – Process Plant Design CEB4022 – Material Science for Chemical Engineering CEB4032 – Analytical Chemistry Submission Deadline (Part 1): 31st October 2021, 12 noon Submission Deadline (Part 2): 22nd November 2021, 12 noon This is an open-ended project assigned to each group of students. Students are required to analyze the question and formulate solutions, involving depth of knowledge and analysis. It integrates various technical knowledge for designing a chemical process plant and involves infrequently encountered issues with various stakeholders. This project deals with general design considerations based on heuristics. This includes understanding the process alternatives, equipment selection, preparing PFD and heat integration. You will need to consider the range of constraints given and comply with PETRONAS Technical Standard for professional engineering practices. Besides, given the importance of material choice in the chemical process industries, selection of an appropriate material for the construction of process equipment will need to be identified. Having the knowledge in analytical chemistry is important to assure the quality and purity of a product produced. Here, the knowledge will be used to determine the most suitable, fast and cost-effective instrument to determine the quality of a final product, taking into account the sensitivity, important source of interferences and errors. With the ever-growing demand for quality and pure products this will be a challenge to address. Project Tasks • Tasks for CEB4013 – Process Plant Design Part 1 (a) Design a Process Flow Diagram without heat integration for your application. (b) Carry out iCON/Symmetry simulation for mass and energy balance for one section (at least four equipment) of the flow sheet. (c) Assume the capacity of the plant (e.g. mass flow rate) and justify. Part 2 (d) Extract any TWO (2) hot streams and TWO (2) cold streams from the flow sheet. Design the heat exchanger network and evaluate the heating/cooling utilities requirement for the selected streams. (e) Design a Process Flow Diagram with heat integration for your application. • Tasks for CEB4022 - Material Science for Chemical Engineering (Part 2) You must select ONE (1) separation unit in your plant and perform the following for that selected ONE (1) separation unit. • • Based on your material science knowledge and understanding, identify the suitable material to be selected for the construction of the selected separation unit. Provide suitable reasons and/or calculation for your choice of materials. The selection of appropriate material for the separator’s construction shall consider (a) mechanical and (b) thermal properties, (c) corrosion resistance, as well as (d) economic factor, in detail. • Suggest recommendations to improve the safety aspect of the chosen separation unit. Provide justification and/or references to support these recommendations. Task for CEB4032 – Analytical Chemistry (Part 2) Based on the product produced in your plant, you must perform the following: • Identify the most suitable analytical method to determine the composition and purity of the product produced from the separation unit. • From the analytical method suggested, evaluate the sensitivity, important source of interferences and errors, and also suggest alternative analytical methods for quality assurances if any. • Today there is a global demand for more clean processes. This demand is driving developments in technology and new materials. However, current standards require manufacturers to use highly sensitive methods to detect contaminants. Such methods are also needed to measure ultra-traces of contaminants, which might be toxic at the low-ppb level. Suggest recommendation to address this issue. Project Report: Part 1 Due on 31st October 2021, 12 noon Part 2 Due on 22nd November 2021, 12 noon Submit a report which contains the following: • Cover page with team details, ID, group number, title of project • Abstract • Table of Content Part 1 • Chapter 1: Introduction of case study, objectives, site selection and plant layout • Chapter 2: Process flow diagram, iCON/Symmetry report, design parameter and plant capacity Part 2 • Chapter 3: Heat exchanger network and utilities requirement • Chapter 4(a): Selection of the suitable material for the selected separation unit with respect to following criteria: (i) mechanical and (ii) thermal properties, (iii) corrosion resistance, and (iv) economic factor. • Chapter 4(b): Recommendations to improve the safety aspect of the selected separation unit with justification. • Chapter 5 (a): Selection of analytical method to determine the composition and purity of the product produced in your plant. • Chapter 5 (b): Calculation/evaluate the sensitivity, important source of interferences and errors, and also suggest alternative analytical methods for quality assurances if any. • Chapter 5 (c): Recommendation to address the contamination measurement at very low levels. • Chapter 6: Conclusions • References • Appendices Writing format: • Font: Times New Roman • Font size: 12 • Spacing: 1.5 Submission Guideline: • • Submission date (Part 1): Week 8, 31st October 2021, 12 noon Submission date (Part 2): Week 12, 22nd November 2021, 12 noon • Submission: Group leader to submit the documents via ULearn (CEB4013 Process Plant Design) o Submission document: Project Report (.pdf) AND Symmetry file • All group members must submit peer review form Peer Review Evaluation Form All group members MUST contribute towards the completion of the project.
