Journey are realized by your Epic/Legendary Hero. Use your answers to develop a summary of
your Epic Heroes’ journey (at least 2 pages, typed, double spaced 12-point Times New Roman,
Calibri or Arial font ONLY!!) following the journey displayed below. Your summary should also
include your hero’s Epic Boast. Additionally, you will create a family tree, Journey chart or collage,
hero’s sidepiece (ie. Thor’s Hammer, Beowulf’s sword, Captain America’s shield etc.), and ONE
Project extension. All parts of the Epic Hero Project must be submitted for full credit.
Step 1: Birth/Childhood (What is the background of your Legendary hero? Where did he/she
come from? What was so special about them?):
Step 2: Tests (What tests/challenges does your legendary hero have? Each hero must have at
least 3-5 quests/tests)
Name/Period:_____________________________
Step 3: Helpers (Who helps your hero in each of their challenges? All heroes have a sidekick/best
friend who assists them in their quest. This friend should be close to the heroes heart and while not
from the same type of lineage/background should display traits similar to the culture you select.)
Step 4: Climax/Final Battle (What is your legendary hero’s FINAL battle? How does their story
end?)
Step 5: Flight and return (What are your hero’s final wishes? How do their wishes embody your

Epic Boast Directions
Using Beowulf’s famous epic boast lines 229-284 as a model, you must act as a Scop (storyteller
used to pass down a cultures history and legends through oral tradition) and create an Epic Boast
for your hero. This is your moment to shine creatively, please use your imagination and design
battles and a lineage truly fit for a hero.
An Anglo-Saxon Epic Boast is…
1. Alliterative by nature. Alliteration is an important element in Anglo-Saxon poetry. One or more
accented syllables in the first half of a line almost always alliterate with one or more accented
syllables in the second half. Thus, alliteration binds together the two halves of a line.
2. The use of kennings, phrases that are an elaborate and indirect way of naming persons, objects,
or events, is another important characteristic of Anglo-Saxon poetry. It is a distinctive element of
Anglo-Saxon poetry.
For instance, the sea is called "the pathless deep," or “whale-road,” and the body is the soul’s
"prison house."
Requirements:
1. Must incorporate a minimum of six kennings.
2. Must use six examples of alliteration (at least three words in each succession).
3. You must begin your epic with the words “Hail _______________” (line 237).
4. You must incorporate “My people have said, ________________” (line 244).
5. Aim for no spelling or grammatical errors.
6. Epic boast is a minimum of twenty-five lines in length and include the 5 battles you described
earlier in your package.

A Hero’s Sidepiece –
Directions: Research signature items used by heroes as they travel on their quests. After gathering
information, create a representation (drawing, painting or 3D model) of your hero’s signature item
(ie. Thor’s Hammer, Beowulf’s sword, Captain America’s shield etc.). Be prepared to discuss the
importance of this item to your character and the powers held in the object when presenting to the
class.
Pictured above: Thor’s hammer Mjolnir and Captain America’s Vibranium shield.

Multicultural Literature Epic Hero Project Extensions
Epic Hero Project Extension Selections – Worth 100 Points
Directions: Choose one of the project ideas listed below. Research and design a classroom
presentation that reflects the knowledge gained by reading Beowulf and studying the Epic
Hero. You must decide what your strengths are and choose a project that will help you to
succeed. All Projects are Due Tuesday October 4, 2022 No Exceptions!!!!!
1.
The Epic in Film – For this project your group will recreate the story of your epic hero by
filming a trailer for a movie centered on your character! Basic plot elements must be
included. Props must be used when necessary, and costumes are expected. The trailer should not
exceed three minutes in length and should show elements from each part of the epic journey. You
must have a soundtrack playing in the background and some word or scenes from a potential
movie. A script should be turned in on the day of the presentation as a guide for the teacher.
2.
Monster Art – Create an artistic depiction of the villain in our hero’s story. Use knowledge
gained from the Epics we’ve read in class as well as more modern epic journey’s as research for the
look and appeal of your villain. Be prepared to discuss the knowledge used to create your
masterpiece when presenting to the class.
3.
Epic Comic Book –Create a comic book that depicts the story of your epic hero. Include
all major plot elements created in part 5 The Epic Journey. You may use an online comic strip
generator like https://www.canva.com/create/comic-strips ,
https://www.storyboardthat.com/storyboard-creator or www.makebeliefscomix.com but be sure
that you are creating an original product. You may also illustrate a comic by hand! Your comic
book must include at least a cover, two pages of comic strips and a back cover. (Out of an
abundance of caution due to the ongoing pandemic, please place your comic in a clear protector
that is easily cleaned if presented a physical project versus an online version).
4. Epic Rap Battle – Using the epic boast and the battles you created for your hero, you must
write and record/perform a Hip Hop version of your Boast. The rap should be at least 16 bars with
a chorus and must use a beat (original or modern sample). You must record your rap or
perform in class. You must present a written copy of your lyrics before your performance and if
all members of your group are not performing you must outline the role they played in song
creation.
5. Epic Hero Parody and Music Video – Take a popular song and re-write the lyrics to create
a song about your epic hero and their epic battles. After writing the lyrics, record a music video to
go along with your performance! You must have a copy of your original lyrics to provide to the
class. The music video must not exceed five minutes in length.
