Uber autonomous incident 3 UBER’S SELF-DRIVING CAR HIT AND KILLED A PEDESTRIAN Uber‘s ethical statement requires both the driver and the passenger to treat each other with respect. There can be no physical contact to avoid sexual harassment. Both parties must follow the local law. The driver does not provide a child seat. Children with the age of twelve and below must sit in the back of the car and wear seatbelts. The passenger cannot interrupt or distract the driver, the passenger cannot touch any parts of the vehicle that are used to operate it. The passenger cannot ask the driver to speed or make illegal stops, drop offs, or maneuvers. In the late evening of March 18, 2018, in Tempe, Arizona, United States, an Uber vehicle was being test driven in autonomous mode with a human safety back up driver sitting in the driving seat when it hit a woman crossing a four-lane street with a bicycle. Elaine Herzberg was taken to the hospital after the incident, there she died of her injuries. Because of the fatal incident, Uber immediately suspended test driving self-driving vehicles in the state of Arizona. In addition, Uber decided not to renew its permit for testing self-driven vehicles in California when it expired at the end of March 2018. The company was sued by Elaine‘s family members but the law suit reached a settlement. All of Elaine‘s family member received counseling. I think that the way Uber faced this incident is ethical, because they did not try to fight it and settled the law suit against themselves. In addition, they researched why that incident happened and did not start test driving of the autonomous vehicles until the issue in hardware was resolved. I agree with the way that the company handled the incident.
