Helping and understanding a patient is a way of building a relationship of trust with the patient. When a patient senses a nurse is trying to help them as much as they can and are advocating for them, they build a trust relationship with the nurse. As nurses we will be the health care providers that will be most of the time with the patient. We have a better opportunity to interact with the patient and get to know them and gain their trust. In many situations we will be present at times where the patient may feel fear or anxiety and we will be the person who can alleviate that anxiety and calm their fear. Trust builds a connection between the patient and the nurse. Communication is very important in the aspect of caring. One of the most important communication skills is active listening. It is not only hearing what the patient is saying but understanding and showing sensitivity to what the patient is expressing. Active listening is a skill that improves with experience over time. By providing active listening helps the patient feel important, respected, and understood. To educate a patient properly it is important the nurse has good communication skills. Communication between health care team members is essential in nursing to ensure patients safety. Pain management is a very important concept related to the concept of caring in nursing. When a patient is in pain it is our obligation to help this patient alleviate that pain the patient is suffering from. It is our job to advocate for that patient who is suffering and help them obtain the proper medications to help them with their pain. Doing this for a patient shows them that we care as their nurse and that we will do all we can to help them feel better. Clinical Judgement is the core of providing excellent care to a patient. From the initial part of an assessment to the very end of the nursing process a nurse has to use clinical judgement to better care for the patient.
