In December 2012, a representative office was established in Hanoi to reach out the Northern part of Vietnam. Untill the end of 2016, one more representative office was opened in Danang city, in the middle area of Vietnam. 1.2 Departments PT Medical’s main departments are: • • • • • • 2 Administration Finance Marketing Logistics Sales Sales support Field of experience During the internship period, I was assigned as the service engineer in Sales Deparment of PT Medical Company. Service engineer is responsible for installing, scheduled maintenance, solving any arising problems regarding the devices and training the market’s staff on how to operate it. 2.1 Medical devices Our department specialized in blood gas analyzers such as Rapidlab 1265, Stratus CS200, Rapidlab 348EX, and Rapidpoint 500. In this internship, I was mainly working with Rapidlab 348EX and Rapidpoint 500. 2.1.1 Rapidlab 348EX Rapidlab 348EX is a blood gas electrolyte analyzer developed by Siemens Healthineer. The device is an easy – to – use analyzer capable of performing quick tests. 3 (Image: Rapidlab 348EX, currently placed at Binh Chanh Hospital) 2.1.1.1 Technology • Rapidlab 348EX using bioelectrode and gas technology for accurate results and long lifespan electrode • On demand or automated calibration 4 2.1.1.2 Device overview • Sample type : whole blood, dialysate fluid. • Sample volume : syringe: 95 µL; capillary: 95 µL; microsample: 50 µL. • Analytes : pH, pCO2, pO2, Na+, K+, Ca++, Cl-, Hct. • Calculated parameters : O2SAT, O2CT, HCO3 (-act), HCO3 (-std), ctCO2, BE(b), BE(ecf), pO2(A-a), pO2(a/A), pO2/FiO2, Ca++ (7.4), pH(T), H+(T), pCO2(T), pO2(T), pO2(A-a)(T), pO2(a/A)(T), ctHb(est). 2.1.2 Rapidpoint 500 Rapidpoint 500 is an upgraded model of Rapidlab 348EX developed by Siemens providing more convenience for technicians to operate. 2.1.2.1 Technology • Rapidpoint 500 used the “cartridge” system, all the necessities for performing tests such as sensors and chemicals are included in the replaceable cartridge. • Electrodes don’t need maintance to work properly. 2.1.2.2 Device overview • Sample type : whole blood (arterial and venous), pleural fluid and dialysate. • Sample volume : syringe: 200 µL; capillary: 100 µL. • Analytes : o Blood gas: pH, pO2, pCO2. o Electrolytes : Na+, K+, Cl-, Ca++. o Metabolites : Glucose, Lactate. o CO – Oxymetries : tHb, sO2, FO2Hb, FHHb, FCOHb, FMetHb, nBili. o Pleural fluid pH. 2.2 Duties In this internship, I was tasked with assisting service engineers in: • Testing, installing, and training new device for new market. • Solving arising problem regarding the installed devices. 2.2.1 • • • • • • • Installing new equipment procedures Service receive new installation request. Diagnostic manager check contract commitments, customer information. Perform site survey. Sales representative contact logistics to confirm shipment. Assign service engineer to perform installation. Confirm installation date with customer. Perform installation. 5 • Validation. • Operator training. • Sign off installation commissioning. 2.2.2 • • • • • • Operator training procedures Service manager assign engineer to perform training. Contact customer for time and operators. Perform operator training. Examining operators’ knowledge. Ask the operators to complete application training satisfaction survey. Ask the operators to sign in the confirmation that they have finished the training. (Image: Rapidlab 348EX operators training at An Binh Hospital.) 6 (Image: Rapidlab 348EX operators training at Binh Chanh Hospital.) 3 Lesson learnt In this internship, I have learnt: • Steps and procedures of how to install a medical devices into new market. • Experience in operating, regular maintenance, and troubleshooting medical devices such as Rapidlab 348EX and Rapidpoint 500. • Insight of working fields of biomedical engineers. • Understanding of the working relationship of biomedical engineer with doctors, operators, and technicians. • Learn the importance of biomedical engineers in healthcare services. • Learn the difficulties and challenges of a biomedical engineer. 7 4 Challenges The major challenges is the working time. A service engineer have to be prepared at all time to ensure the equipment is working properly and always ready to solve any problem arising regarding the equipment. Since our job is closely related to the patients’ wellbeing, we have to put the benefits of our customers first, even at times when the equipment having error at late nights or holidays and require the assistance of the engineers. This have become valuable experience for me in future projects and in real life exposure. 8
