(or Read) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, who created, created man out of (mere) clot of congealed blood. Proclaim! And thy Lord is most bountiful – He who taught (the use of) the pen. Taught man that which he knew not” - Surah al-Alaq: 1- 5 The first surah revealed has already mentioned about ‘computer’ Surah Al-Alaq: 1-19 Prof.Dr.Mohamad Fauzan Bin Noordin 7 Proclaim! (or Read) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, who created, created man out of (mere) clot of congealed blood. Proclaim(Read)! And thy Lord is most bountiful He who taught (the use of) the pen. Taught man that which he knew not” No! [But] indeed, man transgresses Because he sees himself self-sufficient. Indeed, to your Lord is the return. Have you seen the one who forbids A servant when he prays? Have you seen if he is upon guidance Or enjoins righteousness (Taqwa)? Have you seen if he denies and turns away Does he not know that Allah sees? No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock A lying, sinning forelock. Then let him call his associates; We will call the angels of Hell. No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allah ] Surah Al-Alaq: 1-19 Prof.Dr.Mohamad Fauzan Bin Noordin 8 Islamic University: Integration of Knowledge and Civilization (1) ⮚ Carli Fiorina, former CEO Hewlett Packard said : ● ● “Its architects designed buildings that defied gravity, Its mathematicians created the algebra & algorithms that would enable the building of computers, & the creation of encryption. Its doctors examined the human body, & found new cures for disease. Its astronomers looked into the heavens, named the stars, paved the way for space travel and exploration. Its writers created thousands of stories; stories of courage, romance & magic”. When censors threatened to wipe out knowledge from past civilizations, this civilization kept the knowledge alive, and passed it on to others.” Source: Dr Habib Siddiqui (IslamiCity.com) Prof.Dr.Mohamad Fauzan Bin Noordin 10 Islamic University: Integration of Knowledge and Civilization (3) ● “While modern western civilization shares many of these traits, the civilization I’m talking about was the Islamic world from the year 800 to 1600,which included the Ottoman Empire & the courts of Baghdad, Damascus, Cairo, and enlightened rulers like Suleiman the Magnificent” Source: Dr Habib Siddiqui (IslamiCity.com) Prof.Dr.Mohamad Fauzan Bin Noordin 11 Islamic University: Integration of Knowledge and Civilization (4) ● ● “Although we often unaware of our indebtness to this other civilization, its gifts are very much a part of our heritage. Now AI will transform universities. We believe AI is a new scientific infrastructure for research and learning that universities will need to embrace and lead, otherwise they will become increasingly irrelevant and eventually redundant. How they respond to this AI revolution will profoundly reshape science, innovation, education – and society itself. Demis Hassabis, one of Deep Mind's founders, who has a PhD in cognitive neuroscience from UCL and has undertaken postdoctoral studies at MIT and Harvard, is one of many scientists convinced that AI and machine learning will improve the process of scientific discovery. Universities such as Georgia State and Arizona State are using artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor student performance. This can be used to monitor performance against their missions, be it in research, education or promotion of diversity. It can allow faster and more efficient applicant selection and better league tables. Prof.Dr.Mohamad Fauzan Bin Noordin 18 Big Data Analytic Application in Strategic University 1. In a recent survey of provosts and chief academic officers among US colleges, Inside Higher Education analysts (2019) found that only 16% of private university provosts and 19% public university provosts believe that their universities use data very effectively to inform campus decision making. 2. This predicament is often described as being “data rich but information poor” (Reinitz 2015), and precisely how Davenport et al. described the industry almost 18 year ago. Clearly, for data-informed decision making to take root in higher education, we must have conceptual clarity on what defines data-informed decision making and how it can be practiced. 3. Knowledge poor, lack of knowledge and lack of wisdom. Webber, K.L. and Zheng, H.Z. (Eds.) Data Analytics in Higher Education (in press, 2019). Baltimore, MD: Johns Hopkins University Press. Prof.Dr.Mohamad Fauzan Bin Noordin 19 Strategic Planning Big Data Analytics and Private University • • Big Data analytics is part of a university's decision fabric that requires strategic planning from an institutional perspective and the allocation of resources that reflect its growing importance in support of the institution's mission and vision for the future. To be successful in instituting a data-informed decision culture, there are three main conditions that enable strategic use of big data analytic to be accepted and practiced in the higher education environment. 1. People 2. Technology 3. Process and Culture. Webber, K.L. and Zheng, H.Z. (Eds.) Data Analytics in Higher Education (in press, 2019). Baltimore, MD: Johns Hopkins University Press. Tan Sri Dzulkifli Abdul Razak (NST) Prof.Dr.Mohamad Fauzan Bin Noordin 22 Futures Studies (IIIT) • • The exploration of Muslim futures in this study is framed by the Postnormal Times Theory pioneered by Sardar and his colleagues at the Centre for Postnormal Times and Futures Studies (CPPFS), and supported and encouraged by the IIIT. Issues of social justice, income disparity, unemployment, environment, technological and cultural disruption are perhaps more acute and urgent in the Muslim world than elsewhere. -------Muslim Societies in PNT book (Published by IIIT) ------ Prof.Dr.Mohamad Fauzan Bin Noordin 23 Strategic Planning and Futures Studies (IIUM) Futures Scenario Building Workshop- A Virtual Journey to IIUM 2040 24 Prof.Dr.Mohamad Fauzan Bin Noordin Strategy and performance (Strategic Plan 2019 – 2025) 1. 2. 3. Our strategy is based on our heritage, our expertise, our relevance, and our global presence. Inspired by hundreds of hours of engagement with our entire multi-campus community, our new strategy is the culmination of a global conversation about our future. Shaping Tomorrow Together is a values-led strategy seeking to embed our four guiding values – inspire, collaborate, belong and celebrate - into everything we do. Focused on our vision for excellence, our mission to benefit society, and our ethos and values, our strategy expresses what we intend to achieve over the next six years. It builds on our strengths and is organised around four related themes: a) Building flourishing communities Communities flourish when they are inspired, connected, collaborative and valued. Through our strategy, we continue to develop these attributes across students, staff and alumni, and strive to be a positive influence on the communities where we are based. We shape tomorrow together to deliver benefits for all of society. b) Pioneering in education Since our foundation in 1821, we have been outward looking pioneers of education, in pursuit of knowledge to the benefit of society and the world. We offer a distinctive learning experience, enhanced by our global connectivity, and grounded in the needs of a rapidly changing world. c) Excelling in research and enterprise Our research and entrepreneurial approach place us at the forefront of academic endeavour that aims to make an outstanding impact on society. We aim to address crucial world issues through our interdisciplinary approach and close collaboration with industry and business. d) Being a global, connected university Across our five campuses and growing international communities, we work to break down any institutional barriers and further encourage outward engagement, collaboration and partnership Prof.Dr.Mohamad Fauzan Bin Noordin 25 Strategic Plan Executive Summary Strategic Recommendations Prof.Dr.Mohamad Fauzan Bin Noordin 26 Strategic Recommendations (cont.)
