Despite highlighting the personality qualities of the leadership, the impact of contextual factors such as environmental and organizational factors on the construction of leadership identity were given considerable focus. This paper explores the impact of power on leadership identity, that adopting the reflexive approach on how the leadership identity is enacted and constructed. Thirty-two in-depth interviews were conducted on various ranking leaders in Malaysian higher education. This suggests that power as part of political manifestation became one of the emerging factors that rationalized the leadership identity.
